Man shoots suspected prowler with arrow

KELSO, Wash. – Kelso, Wash., police said a man used his compound bow to interrupt an apparent break-in at a nearby vacant home, wounding a fleeing man in the buttocks. Police said the man grabbed his hunting bow late Sunday night and chased a suspected prowler for more than three blocks. When the fleeing man refused to stop, the bowhunter shot him with a broadhead arrow.

A 32-year-old Longview man later sought treatment at St. John Medical Center for an arrow wound to the left buttock. Doctors removed the arrow tip and the man was listed in satisfactory condition Monday.

Kelso Police Capt. Vern Thompson said there were no immediate arrests and the investigation continues. He said charges against both men are possible.

I wonder why he chased him and then shot him?

Wow he chased him for three blocks then shot him?!?!?! This guy is gonna be in a heap o trouble with the law.

Once the BG starts running away the encounter is over. This guy ought to get charged. In my criminal law class there can be a minor exception for when the BG flees and the person pursues the fleeing BG who hasn't committed a violent, off of the property and where the pursuer has no reason to believe he's in danger, for the BG to turn and use force to protect himself. What if the BG had had a gun. Once he was shot in the rump after thoroughly fleeing the scene and being of no threat to the pursuer. Then turned and shot the guy who had just shot him in the rump. I'm not entirely sure of the exception as neither was my professor but I have to wonder. It's why I'm of the belief that if they are on my property than shoot them quick without warning(being inside the house, not outside). If they flee they get left alone and live to see another day. I leave the chasing to the cops.

I think this guy is likely in a heap of trouble and darn lucky the victim is not dead, a shot with a broadhead could have bled him out very quickly.

AFAIK, not legal in any jurisdiction to run people down and then shoot them!

Once the BG starts running away the encounter is over.

Well not necessarily. Subject to state law of course but in general if you witness the commission of a felony you have some ability to effect a citizens arrest.

Been argued here often, and it's nearly always a REALLY bad idea, but it might very well be legal.

The story is pretty vague on why the shot was fired, there is likely more to it than is being reported since no arrest was made at the time.

Don't confuse citizens arrest with self defense.

Some states, I believe Kentucky is one, allow for the use of deadly force while making a citizens arrest in some cases.

Washington state does allow for citizens arrest. Probably get you sued, but might not be illegal.

Seen Ted Nugent in Beer for my Horses shoot a BG in the rear with
his bow....but this guy is going to be in trouble, probably sued, at the least,
but maybe the BG will correct his ways.....?....thats gotta hurt!!!
