Setting up a long range load for my .243 win but the books can't seem to
agree on a load. Hodgdon says 43 grs of H414 is max. Nosler says 40grs,
Lyman says 39 grs, WTH? 100 gr hornady interlock, savage 110L
22in bbl. Any thoughts?

The max is just the most each tester was willing to go. I guess the tester at Hodgdon was braver than the others.

Also keep in mind that the amount of bullet inside the case matters.
If you have 2 bullets that measure 1" in length, one has an OAL of 2.2 the other has an OAL of 1.150, the longer OAL is going to need more powder than shorter OAL.

I hope that makes sense to y'all.

You will see this in all calibers. The lawyers with their wringing hands have the bullet and powder companies so paranoid that they are very concious of litigation. Most manuals are fairly conservative with their load data. You have to realize that there are all kinds of variables to contend with. Bullet depth, a change in primers, different lots of powder, differences in case capacities of different brands, all can make for different pressures. Even chamber size, bullet and over all cartridge lenght can have an effect.

To be safe, I check all of my manuals (7 of em) and I always start with the lowest starting load. Then work up from there. What is safe in my gun might not be safe in yours.

Thanks guys I will use common sense and build from there.
anybody know about serial #23541 ?
