Marlin 336 30-30 pros and cons

Well... and that was why I considered having my FG cut back, but now that I'm shooting steel at distance with it... no. Now... if I can find a basket case FG or C... for cheap!

My delicate little thumb couldn't push the hood off, so I got a mini hammer at Walmart and wrapped duck tape on the head, after a few taps it came off with no problems and no scratches.

I’ve taken the hood off several rifles and they’ve all installed and un-installed the same. I also found out unintentionally that a CZ 512 front sight hood will install on a 336 and vice-versa. I had to tap the 512 hood off it was so tight so I think it’s fairly common.

I'm planning on purchasing a Marlin 336 30-30 from Wally world tomorrow. My needs:
1-Flat shooting out to 150 yards
2-Powerful enough to take hefty hogs and the once in a blue moon mountain lion
3- Quiet enough I won't blow my eardrums out when hunting
4- Easy handling and quick follow-up shots
5- Quality enough it'll be in good shape when I pass it down to my future children.

From the looks of it the Marlin fits the bill, but if I'm wrong y'all set me straight.

This was my first rifle, mainly because it was a lever action and I knew nothing about rifles. For me, too much recoil and report for the range. I'm not a hunter, so in the field it may be fine, but I moved over to the the Marlin 20" octagon barreled .357mag and never looked back.

Did you have a recoil pad on it or was it bare ?

It had a pad, but not much of one. I manage to put not one, but two squibs in it (as I said, I knew little then and had more luck than brains), and sold it to a gunsmith who later told me he managed to get them out and sold it fully functional. One of the few guns I've let go with no regrets.

Unless things have changed the 336W doesn’t have much of a pad. I had a Pachmayr 752B Old English grind to fit pad installed on mine. I also had the gunsmith shorten the stock so the LOP would remain the same. It made a noticeable difference in felt recoil.

The 336w I recently purchased didn't have any pad. I put an Allen foam recoil pad and shell holder on it. I got mine at the local grocery store for 15 dollars, it's a rich brown color so it goes well with the Birch stock and it holds 7 rounds. Nothing more I can ask for.
