I'm searching for a new sight for the old 30-30. I started shooting it and thought a scope was the answer. That didn't really work out so now I'm back to iron sights. I have a variety of loads I use so something easily adjusted would be best IMO.

The gun will be used mostly for range shooting, meaning I will probably push it as far as my eyes will let me. I might also do some coyote or deer hunting later this year. For that application ranges will be more reasonable, like 150 or 200 yards max with 160 grain FTX or Nosler 170 grain Partition bullets.

I've considered Rangerpoint sights, and started looking at William's peep sights. Any other suggestions?

I really like the Williams FoolProof. Easy to mount, easy to adjust, easy to shoot with.

I have a Ranger Point for my Henry 327, but haven't mounted it yet. I like what I've read about it and is pretty well protected against damage.

A very popular sight, for a .30-30, is a peep sight. There are receiver sights and tang sights, that are easily attached to most rifles. With a tang sight you have a longer sight plain, which, in it self, makes for better accuracy. The negative for a tang mounted sight is recoil. With any open peep sight, you need a fairly close sighting position, which could lead to a black eye. Therefore, I recommend the sight that has been used for over a century with much success. Lyman still makes the same receiver sight used on Teddy Roosevelt's 1895 Winchester. Very easily adjustable and accurate + no black eye.

If I were going to use one of my 30-30's for hunting, I think I'd actually throw a red dot on it. They're light and small so they wouldn't add much weight or be as unwieldly as a scope, and I think they'd be good enough out to the effective range of a 30-30. There are lots of options out there, I think you'd just want something with a reasonably tight dot on it. Maybe 2 MOA.

Unfortunately red dot sights behave like red smear sights for me. I'm not against another scope, but would probably go with a 1 to 4 power type, given the applications of 30-30.

I have a 336SC, in 35 Rem with a Williams peep, and the factory hooded front. It has done very well for me. I have been thinking about a "reflex" type, or a 1x4. Do want to upgrade the front site thou.

I really like low powered scopes on my marlins, but I have garbage eyes. Were my eyes super, I'd do a williams fp and a fiber front sight. I've tried skinner and williams, and I like williams better. For the cheapest/sleekest option, the skinner lopro worked ok. But again, my eyes weren't up to the task.

Or a new Leopold 1.5X4 on a RPP mount, Warne quick release mounts, all on the best shooting Marlin I have ever owned, a Remington 336S:

Iron sights and peep sights just do not work for me anymore. The scope on the 336S is removable for reversion to the original sights without loss of zero for close up work.

Either a Williams receiver sight or a skinner peep sight. I have shot a 30-30 with a Williams receiver sight and for me it is much better than the original leaf sight. And that was with my 64 year old eyes at the time.
