Marlin 925, 60

Here I go again. Perhaps I'm thinking about this too hard.
I bought a used Mossberg 640 Mag and I returned it. The scope it came with was garbage, and I also decided I don't need or even want a magnum.

I'm looking to target shoot pretty much exclusively and between the Mod 60 and 925, cost isn't a big deal. (my preference is bolt action though)

I've dug in the forum and find that owners of either rifle love it, so I'm torn because I didn't find any threads that put one against the other.

What IS the deal with the price tags though? One is ~ $50-60 more than the other.

Any one shot a good number of rounds through both of them?

I own a 925 but have not shot it much , with PMC Scoremaster it has proven to be a fairly accurate rifle. I need to lighten the trigger to and I am sure that will improve my consistency.

I have a 925M 22 Mag and I love it...it has the newer trigger and it breaks clean with no take up...but it could be lightened a bit.

Since it seems I'll be happy with either one I get, perhaps I'll get the Mod 60 for myself, (since it's cheaper) and a Cricket youth model for my 6 year old. He has held one to his shoulder at Cabela's and it fits him perfectly.

I'm familiar with shooting having done so with my dad when I was younger (not as young as mine though) but this would be my first rifle, too.

I think it would be good bonding time at the range.

well, the thought is this, the 925 is more of a classic rifle, mag fed , little thicker stock, and more capable of add ons later. As well, theoretically, it would be more accurate. I have seen some wonderful , creative jobs done on 925's, especially the sotcks, which you can get some aftermarket stocks for the 925 as well.
The mod 60 looks more like a kids rifle, and a lot of dudes, don't like tube fed, and again, theoretically, it should not be as accurate. But I have never seen that proven. Also , even after 45 years, there is virtually no aftermarket goodies for the mod 60, with the exception of a bullpup type stock, that floats around out there every once in a while. I have never heard how these work, how reliable, etc.

Well I've already convinced myself against buying a youth rifle for the boy. So now I'm back leaning towards the 925.

I think you will find that tube fed 22s are very accurate. There is a thread here about the model 60 and it shoots dime sized groups at 50 yards. I would put the link but i have not tried to do that before. If you read here much you have most likely seen it anyway.

I personaly don't like magazines and prefer tubes. They both have pros and cons. If you buy a Marlin you will not regret the purchase. I have never had one that wasn't a shooter. As far as after market stuff most people don't dress them up. They buy them because they are cheap and available at Walmart. Its what they see. I bet half of all the ones sold were bought at Wally World.

I have used both extensively. I own a 925 in .22lr.

If your wanting best groups/target shooting then the 925 performs better.

My 925 with WolfMT (SK target+) will shoot dime to quarter size, 7 shot groups @ 50 yards regularly. Just made some of those little beauties this morning.

The 60 is no slouch, and holds twice as many rounds, but for me the bolt is better.

* I should also add that I have floated the barrel of my 925, it does not come that way. Don't know if it helped any, but it sure didn't hurt.

I've had my 60 forever and it does shoot great, the only problem I have with it is that when it jams, it jams. I mean, when it happens, you HAVE to break out the needle nose pliers to pry that empty out of there, then you have one in the chamber also and one in the tube ready to be fed, precarious situation. For a plinker it's fun, I just hate digging in that chamber to pry the empty out when it happens. Whereas the bolt, everything is pretty much accessible......as a matter of fact, I cannot recall one single situation with my old 25N where there was a feed or extraction problem, utterly reliable.

I actually haven't seen any guns at WalMarts here. They don't carry any guns, just ammunition. I don't know why, it seems bizarre -- considering this is central Texas. I discovered Marlin in the used section at Cabelas; then again on their new-gun rack. I handled the 925 there and really liked it.
Are there any other magazine options for it? Maybe a 10 or 15 round? It's not a deal breaker.. just curious.

I don't know if there are any bigger mags available for the 925.

There is though a tube feed bolt version that is very similar to the 925. I can't remember the model number though.

You could check the Marlin web site.

I went searching at Bass Pro for extra mags and a scope mount today. Looking for extra mags, I saw the 10 round nickel plated mags that were not labeled for use on the 925, but are indeed identical, expensive, but identical to the 7 rounders labeled for use on the 925. The tube fed bolt .22 is called the 981T.

Got a 925 earlier this year, and I absolutely love it. I took it to the range acouple of weeks ago to check how it shoots, DEAD ON! Kinda looking forward to the coming end of tree rat season!

That 981T is pretty nice, too. Too bad it's not available in a hardwood stock. That would be the clincher right there.
