Hello,
I'm new to shooting rifle and just got my first .22lr. I picked up a Marlin 925 because I thought the price was reasonable. Anyways, what is the effective range for a stock Marlin 925 with the iron sight? By "effective," I'm talking like hitting paper plate sized targets.

Also, how well does this rifle work with Walmart bulk Fed 36gr HP and Remington GB 36gr HP?

Thanks.

I have a Marlin 25 in .22lr. I havent shot it in a years since my siser lost the magazine, but I remember it being pretty accurate. I would say at least as accurate as my Savage MkII, and that will keep ammo on a paper plate to at least 100 yards.

stay away from anything remington, go with just about anything else, bulk or individual pacs. Stay away from CCI stingers as well; they just proly won't group well for you. anything winchester, federal, CCI, should be good for you.
A 22 , in a calm wind , can easily hit targets out to 150 yds. if you have the elevation, and a good scope, I mean really good, you can hit targets on a calm day, out to 300 yds, really. There is a dude who recently did this, with a 12 lb turkey wrapped in peoples' clothes, to check it's penetration capabilities.
Long story short, rounds penetrated 3 layers of clothes, the turkey, and then the 6 layers of clothes wrapped up behind it.
Usually, with average conditions and a light wind, you should be able to regularly hit small targets, out at 100 yds.
Chances are, your best ammo choices will be this, for accuracy;
anything winchester
anything federal
American Eagle , red box
Remington orange box(made by Eley)
remmy yellow box (made by Eley)
anything Aguila (made by Eley)
anything golden eagle (made by Eley)
anything Eley- notice a trend here?
anything wolf
anything CCi, except bulk pac.
NEVER USE REMINGTON, EXCEPT THE MENTIONED ABOVE!!!!
remmy is the stinkiest, dirtiest, most poorly crimped, unreliable, filthy
etc., etc.
check to see if that rifle will also shoot short, and longs, should say so
on the bbl. if so, don't be afraid of shorts, especially cci , short , hollow point
hi velocity. Also , for backyard shooting, look for Aguila colibri, or super colibri's. allthough make sure when you use Colibri's, they actually made it out the end of the bbl, the colibri's are pretty weak, the super's are a bit stronger.
Lastly, make sure the bbl is freefloated, stick a dollar bill around the bbl inthe shape of the letter U, and move it from the front of the bbl, where the stock begins, and pull it backward, toward the receiver. If it hangs up anywhere, take some sandpaper, and sand out the stock right there, don't be afraid to oversand, becuase you are gonna reseal these spots with minwax,
anyway. Make sure you check this, after firing about 20 rounds as fast as you can, while at the range, so that the bbl heats up first, then you can check the freefloat, with your bbl at it's fattest.

my 925 shoots Stingers quite well.

just a different POI and not as tight as the Wolf.

best finds so far other than WolfMT, were PMC Sidewinders, and then maybe Federal 810's.

i'm not sure the Sidewinders are still available, and the Feds are sometimes not consistant.

Thanks for the inputs.

I'm a bit confused with the stock sight. The back sight can be adjusted, what is the use of it?

Also, my .22lr Skeeter seems to love Remington GB and hates Fed bulk :( I guess the Marlin 925 is the other way around. Sad thing is, I have the two brands of ammo all mixed up in an iron ammo can, all roughly 3k-4k of each, so about 6k-8k all mixed up lol. Sorting them out will be a B*tch :banghead:

Anyways, I'm going to try it out this weekend.

Again, thanks for the input.

My 925 likes the 36 gr. CCI mini mags above 35 degrees outdoor temp and Wolf Match Extra in any temperature.

Effectiveness? Took a squirrel at 63 yards through it's eyeball and a crow at 134 yards 1 shot!
