Why are the 39As so darn expensive? I'm hearing $400 from local shops. I can pick up a 336 for less than this and make bigger holes. Let's not even mention the model 60 that's way less than this.

I'd really like to pick one up for my son to start hunting small game with this year. He will be a first timer and I think it would be good to have him using something that will have the same mechanics as a deer rifle will in a few years.

Ever shoot one?

It's built like a centerfire, all machined steel, and it's a takedown. Metal and wood match the 336C, not the cheaper 336's.

It's a whole different class of gun from the 60, the 10/22, etc. It's a grownup's toy, really, and a practice gun. I bought mine, in part, to shoot at the indoor range down the street, so I can get in a bit of practice in the evening when I get antsy -- they don't allow centerfire rifles. And I got it because, well, it's just plain really nice. I had been looking at bolt-action .22's, but the 39 is just as accurate, no more expensive, and ten times higher on the "neat-o" factor, than any bolt gun not priced somewhere in the outer stratosphere.:)

Compare to the BL-22, SA-22, 552/572, CZ-452, 77/22, not the entry-level stuff. I think the 39A compares favorably, and other than the 39, only the Browning SA is a takedown. The BL is too small and light for my taste. But the 39A is a full-size gun that weighs 6.5 lb. with iron sights. I like that, but it may not be a kid's gun.

If you want a lever gun for him, a youth-model Henry is good, and half the price of the Marlin. Grooved for a scope, too. http://www.henryrepeating.com/h001y_leveryouth.cfm The Henry works well, and it is a good deal smaller and lighter than the Marlin.

That is an upside down sling! I have had requests to make up side down slings. I just told them to turn the sling around?:D

Yep. I've always put my long gun slings on "upside down" because I find African carry much more comfortable and much quicker to shoulder than American carry.
