ok so i maybe be behind, but i've never seen a club for the marlin semi's.
so i decided that i wanted to see and hear about your guns and how you got them and some stories about them. so if you have a 60 or a 795 or any of the variants i would really love to see them and hear about them!

They shoot. My Marlin 60 shoots better than the 795. My 795 is a bit finicky on ammo. Likes CCI Mini Mags the best. My 795's action came very tight and needed to be broken in. The 795 is probably the best value out there on a new 22LR semi-auto rifle.

Got my first 60 when I was 16. Picked up my latest one in 2008. Nice guns. Older one had feed throat problems, newer one is just picky about ammo.
Had optics on the original; but I prefer the newer one with just Irons and my speed loader. Great fun at the range :D.

I'm not a Marlin 60 "fanboy", I have a Ruger 10/22 as well. I don't prefer one over the other; they both have their strong and weak points. Just got a Marlin 60 first.. :)

I traded a cheap rangefinder from walmart(~$50 value) for one a few years back.

At the time I had a 10/22 with a bedded stock and trigger job.

I brought the old beat up marlin to the range with my 10/22 and proceed to shoot groups 1/2 the size of the 10/22.

This was my first trip out with bulk ammo @ 50yds

Soon after I redid the stock and painted the reciever(she was beat up)

Sold my Savage 93BTVS to fund a 795 and ammo purchase. My 795 outshoots my old Savage everyway possible. I couldn't be happier with it.

Now that I'm in the market for a .22 rifle, please explain to me why the Marlin is so much better. What makes the Marlin so much better than the Ruger, Mossberg or Reminton brands? Ive read a great many articles on all the above but, I'd like to get some real world opinions, not a paid review.

My '92 60W-Trigger work, pillar bedded action, free floated barrel, refinished stock, .45 brass for a charging handle. Better scope since this pic...

It's a tack driver with CCI SV and Fed Automatch. Never had a single problem with it in almost 20 years of plinking.

A model 60 glenfield was the first gun i bought with my own money. Had the feed throat problem and posted my fix (without needing new parts). I'll post a pic later.

I actually just bought a 795 yesterday and am now just waiting for my scope to come in. Broke it down and cleaned it yesterday evening and I have a question: my stadard cleainin rods seemed a little large for the bore, so what do you use to clean the bore?

I bought my 795 a couple months back when we went out of town to cabelas and that just happened to be the day they were on sale for $99. Put a bushnell rimfire scope and a super sling on it and bought a couple extra mags for it. Only shoot federal bulk in it and can normally do sub 1" groups offhand at 50 yards. Can hit cans the majority of the time at 80 to 90 yards so it's plenty accurate. Never jams and is a ton of fun to shoot. I love how its so light and small compared to my other .22's makes it really nice to carry around all day.

I've had several Marlins in .22LR past and present and they are not "so much better" than other brands. They are a solid value for the money. Accurate & reliable. I especially like the 25N. It was a tack driver out of the box. Heavy trigger but was still able to do dime sized groups at 50 yards. I've also had/have several Rugers 10/22s. While they are extremely fun guns, they are not as accurate as my older Marlins. Granted, the Rugers are still pretty much stock. The 795 and the 10/22 are about on par as far as stock accuracy.

well Byrd666, i can only speak for my self, but between the other semi's on the market it always seems to me that the other guns are built like toys. i know i'm gonna hear about it from some guys but one thing i hate is pot metal! and just so i don't have to have the argument later the reciever is made of sand cast aluminum on the marlin semi's.
I've only seen one marlin that was not 1moa at 100 yards out of the box, and after we pulled the barreled action the reciever was spilt under the front, kinda looked like the box crushed in shipping and the barrel leveraged against the stock and reciever.

oh and Onward i do want to say this also,
i agree with you totally i dont think one is so much better than the other, I just think that the marlins (at least the older ones) are built better. And i'm a really big fan of the micro groove rifling, less fouling with the right ammo, and it doesn't cut the bullet up as much. and it is just my opinion but i think that a press fit and pinned barrel is more consistant than a clamped barrel.

I love my 795. Its so light and accurate. Works really well with most ammo and it's a great deal at around $100, whats not to love? For anyone who doesn't use a scope I would also recommend tech-sights, they're awesome. Maybe I'l get a pic of mine later. Mac66, I read your review of what you did to your rifle and thats awesome, sort of inspiring me to do something similar.

Onward and jws

Thank you both for the responses. Like I said, I've done quite a bit of reading on this and that but, haven't really seen a whole lot of "real world" stuff. I've been leaning towards the 60 anyway. Now all I need is an ATI Fiberforce stock and a decent scope.

Oh, by the way, didn't try to steal your post jws, just figured I had an opportunity to learn a thing or ten.

Great club thread idea! Hopefully we can get this one going, because I know there are a lot of marlin semi-auto fans out there.

My first rifle, that I bought myself on my 18th birthday, was a Glenfield M60. It has been used A LOT, plinking and shooting prairie dogs. It needs a new feed throat, and a refinish job on the stock (a nice light color stock with the squirrel) and the receiver. It will be getting both, and will live to shoot again!

When the M60 developed the feeding problem, and I decided to stable it for an overhaul and preservation because of sentimental value, I bought a 795. I didn't care for the synthetic stock, so I switched to a wood stock, and then added a GI sling and tech-sights. It is a great little rifle, set up for appleseed shoots. I haven't gotten a chance to do one of those yet, but it is in the plans. In the meantime, the little 795 is a great little plinker-light, accurate, and inexpensive to shoot. It is easy and non threatening for new shooters too, which is an important tool for every firearm enthusiast to have on hand.

I will get some pictures and put them up, although it may be a month or so because I have a lot going on (I will resurrect the thread if it has gone by the wayside!).

I am a Marlin .22 enthusiast, but I am willing to acknowledge that there are certainly nicer guns out there. I also get the 10/22 thing (but I have an AR for that). Bottom line though, IMHO for inexpensive, simple shooting fun it would be really hard to beat one of the marlin semi-autos!

Byrd666 -- no prob man thats the reason i started the tread! but a little advice - unless your into the tack-t-cool thang , skip tha fiberforce and look at one of the boyd's stocks for it

For anyone wanting to try the 25 round mags just FYI alot of people have problems with them. I tried one it jammed every other shot until about round 10 when it jammed so bad I broke it in half trying to get it out of the gun because a bullet got wedged in at a funny angle and got the whole thing stuck. I returned it and got another factory 10 rounder which have never given me problems.

I'll join... I love my 795. I'll post a pic later.

Also, the 25-rounder has been fine for me, but maybe I got lucky? Marlin factory 10-rounders are absolutely flawless, though. Wish they'd just make a few extended mags.

Got my Marlin 60 earlier this month.

I really like it, but I want to get an 795 too. I just liked the wood stock of the 60 more, and at first the magazine tube seemed appealing but it is kind of a pain to reload in some respects.

But, yeah, I'm going to get a 795 so I can have a rifle with just open sights or maybe those tech sights.

Here's my Glenfield (Marlin) Mod 60 I purchased in 68. Zero issues to date. :)
