Hi there.

This is my first gun so do bare with me. I bought a Marlin Model 60W off of a friend who owns more guns than I could count in one sitting. It was cheap- $40, but he was trying to get me into guns so it was sort of a 'benefactor' thing.

Well, I opened up the gun as per his instructions to clean it. After cleaning it, I could not get the 'guts' of the gun back in. Trying several variations, I finally managed to get the little metal prongs to fit beneath the front pins and got the pin to fit in the back. Well, this left my bolt stuck back. It is stuck in the open position and will not release. I have broken the gun down again and even with the bolt exposed and unobstructed, it will not release. I am quite new to guns so please do excuse my lack of proper terminology if I am off.

Anyone have a similar problem or a possible solution? I quite want to go shooting again (this is addicting ^,^) and am anxious to play with my new baby. Help?

Oh my... new development.

Alright, the whole bolt popped out (got my hand jarred darned bad in the process) and I discovered my spring is longer than my receiver. Should it be this big and might this be the problem? Can anyone post pictures of their receiver and the process for putting this thing back together? I would greatly appreciate any help.

Did you get an owners' manual with the rifle? If no, you might want to get one from Marlin's website, if possible.

Its hard to tell from your description, but I believe you are describing the recoil spring. The one one that makes the bolt move back forward after recoil pushes it back.

Yes, its supposed to be partially compressed when the bolt is re-installed. That's one of the trickiest parts of re-insterting the bolt.

You have to put the recoil spring guide in the recoil spring, then put the spring in its opening in the back of the bolt, then compress the spring while you re-insert the bolt (and line up the charging handle at the same time...)

Having 3 hands helps :(

Its just a tricky procedure.

And you need to remove the bolt every 200 rounds or so to clean the gunk off it, or the rifle will start jamming.

I wrote up THIS in the summer ... might help a bit. Best not to take down any further than necessary.

The recoil spring just needs carefully eased into compression over the guide rod as bolt replaced. Anyways ... see if this helps.

To clarify... I think the spring is too big. It is literally bigger than the receiver box length wise. It is 5 5/8" length. Is that right?

Oye... many bruised fingers later and I still have question, how do I fit the recoil spring back into the receiver? It keeps flicking out or I just don't have the dexterity and strength to push it back in, hold it and slide it into place.... is there a trick I am missing?

My sincerest apologies if I am being a pest.

Gunsmith time

they can probably do it in a coupla minutes. And FWIW, mine was given to me by a friend, shortly before he died...don't know that he used it much...However, in the last year I've put 5-6000 (yes, thousands) of rounds through mine, and never stripped it down...Works flawlessly with anything I feed it...
