Got this last Friday and they had been backordered for a long time but I traded off another gun I never used and got a decent out the door price for this new one.

Shot for the second time today and after installing a muzzle brake which helped me to get back on target without issues. Shooting hand loaded 405 grain RNFP lead over a lighter charge of Trail Boss powder 12 Gn and the pictures are at 25 yards using stock peep sights by Skinner and they are wonderful.

Helped this old guy who has been only shooting for 70 years keep them in the close groups you see. Next time out, 50 yards... good enough for a deer or bear.

The brake added more noise and smoke or smell but reduced recoil some and allowed me to get back on target faster.

I called Scheels in Jordan Creek Town Center in Des Moines (515) 727-4065. Michael in firearms says they don't have any Trail Boss powder.
I've been actively searching for it for more than a year without luck. There are places that claim to have it but don't really. I'm pretty sure Hodgdon hasn't made Trail Boss for a while.

Trail boss is no more and will never be made again. The company that produces it in Australia for Hodgdon is supposedly working on a replacement product. I would have bought 20 lbs of it if I had known.

Beautiful new Trapper TSBL :).

Here is a (upside down!) target, 3 and 5 shot buckhorn sights at 100 yards. The number 4 was shot with the scope re-mounted (Warne quick release mounts) and 1-4 Nikon African at 4X.

I think that was HLR 325FTX ammo and that was with my new GBL. I was trying to co-wittness the sights with the scope for 100 yards.

The Scheels here had a (empty) cannister on display. I asked the clerk if they had any and he said yes, rolling his eyes. Everything on display was in stock. Yeah, right ;). So I asked him to go get me some. About 30 minutes later he comes back exasperated, there is none. I asked him what the eye rolling was for earlier :fire:. So, they are FOS. A few days later I was back at the store, the display jug is gone. All I can say is if you actually find some Trail Boss, you better get it.

As far as working on a replacement for TB, that sounds sketchy. How about working on a replacement of TB with some more TB. That should be easy enough.

Ditto how tough can it be, just to make more of a best selling powder??????

I assume hodgdon didn’t grow tired of making money so there is probably some other reason they quit making it but I don’t know what the reason is. Vihtavouri discontinued Tin Star as well

I'm hoping the quality is improved on the new Ruglins. The Remlins were awful, from what I saw.
The first years of Remington were pretty bad, I purchased a 2014 made 44 Magnum and it was perfect. You need to do some research on the new Ruger made Marlins levers you will be surprised at how good they are, mine is perfect.

the new 336 and 1894s are within the last few months, so couldnt been one of them. the 4570s were out last year but very rare in our area....

Perhaps Trey was speaking of one of the Remlins? Indeed, Ruger was very careful not to re-introduce any of the Ruger made rifles that were not top quality. They have been quite focused on that.

I would guess that, I did a Lot of research before buying this and I have a lot of Rugers There are zero issues with mine, and I have not heard of others with problems with any model Ruger made for Marlin. If it does have problems… they will take care of it.

Taking the thread off topic but exactly how was a Ruger made Marlin "garbage" as I would be interested to know.

So you are saying the OPs rifle is garbage?
I have the photos on my home computer, but the one I handled and took photos of had bad wood to metal fit, rough machining, and rust already forming in a couple of spots. It was still on the gun rack in the store.

To me, that is garbage.

I have been acutely aware in my many discussions regarding Remlin and Ruglin rifles, that many people are simply blind to quality issues. Many simply don't notice wood that is proud, or poor machining and finishing. That is fine. But their ignorance of quality is tiresome when they in turn attack others who have higher standards of fit and finish in rifles costing close to $1000 or more.

Again, as soon as I see Ruglin and Remlin in a sentence the credibility of the author drops.

You mean like this:

Plus it gets tiresome when yours is the only complaint I have ever read. There are many happy owners that are not blind or dumb as you suggest. So perhaps your the one with the problem?
