MAS 36 in .308?

I have one that I have not had any problems with. I had it checked by a gunsmith after I bought it and he said that it was safe to shoot. He told me that all military rifles would close on a .308 no-go gage and to get a .308 field gage. If it does not close on the field gage then it is safe to shoot.

How do you like yours?

How do you like yours? What kind of accuracy are you getting with yours. I like the look of them and am thinking about picking one up.

I like mine. I can ring the steel gong with open sights with mine at 100 yards at my gun club. It was my first C&R rifle and got me hooked. I have since bought a MAS49/56 and a FR-8. I also have a Spanish 1916 on order. All of them in 7.62x51. I also have a Mosin-Nagant M90/30, M38 and a M44 in 7.62x54R.

I've got a MAS 36 that an uncle brought back from WWII, never have fired it. Its still in 7.5 French. I've always wondered what kind of shooter it would be.

I have the opportunity to buy one, but I've been holding off because I'd heard lots of stories about the gas system not being compatible with the 308. As the stories went, the MAS 308 conversions would suffer from rim separations and FTEs.

I take it that y'all have not experienced any of these dire symptoms? ;)

Irony at it's finest. I had never heard of this rifle nor this caliber until today -- when I found out my 7.5mm ammo was 7.5 French/MAS and not 7.5Swiss.

Everybody else seems to have trouble finding 7.5 French and I just happend to have a box of it heaved in my direction when needing 7.5 Swiss.

Well, the local Dunham's in Grand Rapids MIchigah has plenty of the French stuff :D

I have converted several to 308 and they have all been pretty fair rifles for a milsurp conversion.
Make sure that the barrel has been set back, the 7.5 French chamber won't clean up for 308 if you do not.
They are fairly strong if ugly.
Have made them in 308
and rebarreled them to 358 and 1 in 300WSM as an experiment.
Took 5 of my proof loads without a hitch. Not horribly accurate though.
