I was always curious as to what pistol matches this rifle? Caliber does not have to be the same, but I guess I'm looking for something that just seems to go with the Saiga, or any AK-type weapon really. I was hoping for something modern (black?) and still in production.

Examples of traditional rifle/pistol combos (correct me if this is not the general train of thought):

Garand / Colt 1911
AR-15 / M9
P90 / FiveseveN

What handgun could a civilian like myself buy to match my Saiga? And please don't say the shorty AK Pistol, lol.

Hopefully this request makes sense, it's embarassing that I can't even list specifications on what I think a matching handgun for this gun should be like. It's just that I'm looking for... I don't know... something that just goes with it.

Thanks in advance to all replies.

The Soviets basically decided the pistol was useless after about 1970 or so, and only issued them as decorations for the most part. One could say the gun that goes well with the AK is no gun at all.

We civillians however dont usually have to contend with body armor or squads of assailants, and we carry pistols because we like them so with that in mind, I would concur that a Makarov or Tokarev would fit nicely, and they are very good pistols besides.

And you will never find either in this country, but I would say you wont find anything cooler as far as soviet handguns go:

12.5x40mm? Ouch.

I have always felt like my glock is the pistol equivalent of my saiga. It is rugged, durable, super reliable, and inexpensive. They are also both all black (although I one day will get around to dura coating the saiga).

Yeah, I agree... while the simple answer is Makarov, I also feel the counterpart for the Saiga is one of the Glocks.

Reliable and ugly.

Conversion for Saiga

I just posted a Saiga inquiry on the rifle board. Have you converted yours into a full AK platform? If so, why? Thanks.

A Tokarev pistol. I'll take that over a Makarov any day. Go for the Romanian version. They're accurate and good all around. Shoot like a good 1911.

I agree with the Tokarev round, but go with something that looks a little snazzy like the Czech CZ-52.

go with the tokarev. if you get a recent import, disable and remove the "safety" that was added to bring it into import configuration. they get 1500 fps with standard romanian surp ammo all day long, and will pole axe any chronograph you shoot with them.

What do these have in common?

Garand / Colt 1911 - Classic American-made wartime pistols
AR-15 / M9 - Civilian versions (well, the 92 would be) of currently-issued military firearms
P90 / FiveseveN - Both FN

I can't see what Saiga and Glock have in common. I personally would think that Makarov or Tokarev would pair better.

The Makarov is the best companion for an AK pattern rifle, but if a more powerful round than 9X18 rings your bell then try a nice Tokarev or CZ-52 in 7.62X25.
