Mauser Action For Rifle Build

I've been wanting to build a custom rifle for a while now. My first purchase is going to be an action. I'm really steering towards a 6.5 swede build and was thinking a Mauser action would be a good bet. This is going to mostly be a target/range gun, but may see some field use. So, any ideas where I can buy just an action?

Get one of the cheap Turkish rifles with the large ring action, but threaded for small ring Swedish Mauser barrel. A 6.5 Swedish Mauser barrel will fit like made for it.

You picked a great cartridge to build on and a great action also. The Turk/Swede is a good option or you can go with a standard LR 98 and pick up a 6.5x55 barrel from Midway or Brownells.

I've got a LR 98 Spanish Mauser action that I'll let go for $180 shipped if you are interested. I'll need an FFL01 or C&R FFL to ship.

The last one of these sold last night. They will get more in. At the price, I would spend a couple of hundred on a stock and put decent glass on it. "Custom" is very pricey these days unless you find a Savage action and do it yourself. Not a bad option really. The Savage is very easy to add triggers, barrels and custom bolt part so.

You don't have to depend on finding a loose action for sale, there are untold thousands of pre-Bubbaed Mausers out there. You might could buy one of them and strip it for the action for less than a bare action would cost.

This sort of thing is a nice project for the well equipped home shop or for the wealthy sportsman, but a true custom sporting rifle will cost far more than a new gun.

hunter dude,look for a howa action form legacy sports you can get the stripped action or a barreled action in blue or stainless.up dated safeties and triggers.

I've picked up quite a few pre-butchered rifles as donors. They've run me anywhere from $50 to $200, depending on the gun. If it has already been drilled-and-tapped for scope mounts, make sure that it was done well. There are ways to work around it if they're off a little bit, but it can be a pain. I usually look for ones that haven't been drilled, but I've been able to get all of them to work one way or another.

I usually find mine either in pawn shops or online on local classified ads.

If you are still wanting to do a Mauser, google Miller's Gun Shop in Jacksonville, NC. He mentioned having some to sell last time I was there. I have too many projects right now and I he mentioned having "a bunch."

Here is one factor that you haven't mentioned, WHETHER OR NOT YOU'RE GOING TO REPLACE THE STOCK.

If you want to put a new stock on the gun as well, you better pay attention to the action you select and make sure you can find a stock maker that inlets for that particular action. Turk Mausers are not very common and I would NOT recommend them if you are going to be putting them in a different stock.

Yugo M48 and German K98 actions are usually the most popular. If you stick with one of those, you will not have any problem finding a stock for them. I use the Yugo M48 actions for my builds. I have a Yugo M48 action being built in 6.5x55 as we speak.

Also, the recommendation for the Howa 1500 action or barreled action is a GREAT choice. This is a much more modern action and you can also get a barrel installed on the action as well. Saves a lot of work and money. Not to mention that the Howa 1500 is also a common action and finding a stock will be very easy. A lot of people don't know, but Howa used to make all of the actions for the Weatherby Vanguard series guns.
