I bought a new Mauser barrel chambered for 7.62x39 a few years ago. I just decided to install it in an M48 that I have. I removed the M48 barrel and found that the M48 had a barrel with a 28mm thread. My 7.62x39 barrel has a 25 mm thread. Could someone please tell me what Mausers have a 25mm thread?

Many thanks,

The short answer is "none." Mausers have standard (British) threads. The large-ring actions are threaded 1.10"x12 tpi. Small-ring actions are 0.980x12 tpi. It sounds as if your barrel is threaded for something other than a Mauser action.

If you multiply 28x.03937=1.10". 25x.03937=.984" This is how I determined that the Germans would only be using the Metric system.

German Mauser rifles are threaded using Whitworth thread pitch.
The .762X39 barrel you have sounds like one for the Interarms Mark X Mini Mauser.

The Mauser threads started life in the late 19th century. By the time the 1891 Mauser rifle came out, the standard barrel thread was 12 threads per inch. The British Standard Whitworth Thread form is simply a 55 degree thread instead of the 60 degrees in common use today. The roots and peaks of the threads are rounded instead of flat. The metric system was not standardized until much later. ISO Metric thread form was not standardized, for instance, until 1975. The Germans, for reasons of compatibility, used 12 threads per inch for all their production. There is not a metric screw in a Mauser rifle. The action screws are 1/4x22. At the time they were first used, there was no NC or NF thread form either. If there had been, the screws would have been made 1/4x20 or 1/4x28.

Now I know why they used the Whitworth threads. Many thanks. The small ring action is exactly what I need. Could you tell me which Mausers have the small ring action?

Many thanks,

'91, '93, '95 and '96. There are also some post-'98 small ring actions; most (if not all) commercial units, most made by FN (as best I can tell).

Model 93, 94, 95, and 96 are common small-rings. Less common are some Model 98's with small rings. Husqvarna made a beauty. There are also Model 98 Large-ring actions with small-ring threads -- notably some of the Turks currently available. I have to agree with Onmilo -- your barrel is likely for a Zastava mini-mauser.

Thank you very much for the information. I bought this barrel about two years ago and wondered at the time why I got it so cheap, About $50 as I remember.

many or most

of the durrently available "Turk" Mauser, while having the outside dimensions of the large ring 98 mausers, have a barrel threaded for the small ring...These are cheap and common and would be good project guns

Because they were cheap, I have a few of the "Turk" Mausers. I will start checking for the small ring threads.

Many thanks,
