I just obtained an ok Mauser M48. It is claimed to never have been fired but it was warlike marks and nicks on the stock. Also the bolt sticks in the chamber. I'm guessing the action gummed up over the years and continues to stick. It stick enough to have to pound the bolt open. How do I go about fixing it? An how much is it roughly worth?

Either the chamber is dirty or the bolt. Probably has cosmoline in it that needs cleaned out.

Many, if not most, of these rifles were issued only briefly, then put in storage. After half a century, the cosmoline will have hardened up enough that a thorough cleaning is necessary before use.

M48 worth?

they are going for $200-$300 in these parts, however overzealous sellers will ask $350 or more,
I've seen them as high as $475:eek: (probably worth it 20 years from now):D

BenGunUSA, I'd be shocked and amazed if it had never been fired. With that said, you likely have a good rifle. There's a product called Kano Kroil Oil. You my wish to get some. Remove the stock and apply some Kroil on all the outside metal. let is sit for a day or so, then get to cleaning. Don't baby it, get everything as clean as possible. You may wish to take the rifle to a gunsmith to get it checked out. have the head space looked at.

some of these are a bit soft in the receiver lug area, and will have "set-back" that locks a gun shut after firing. if you are saying that you have never fired it, but that the bolt sticks when shut, i would suggest a thorough cleaning. if it is sticking closed after firing you may have receiver set-back issues.

If you have not broken down the entire rifle, including the bolt, and cleaned it well, do that first. That is probably the cause of your problems. Go watch a How-to video on it on Youtube if you've never done it before.

If the problem persists after that, have it checked out. All the M48's have stiff bolts when you first start shooting them, but not THAT stiff. They are great little Mausers.

+1 on this. Mine was the same way, and a good cleaning corrected the problem.
