So I am out on the Pink Pistols shoot. Nothin' but Oregon Sunshine on the coast range (meaning rain, wind, more rain, some light gusts, then some pelting rain). Camraderie is good, coffee is hot, and explosives are fun! We found a great slingshot device for clays and were having a grand old time out at Timber Pit.
I really enjoy my Maverick 88 (nicknamed Zoey). It's a lovely shotgun, and I have added the Knoxx SpecOps stock to it, but it has a problem:
Dropping shells.
The problem may actually be caused by multiple factors, some discovered after reading the archives here (see---I did my homework!).
I feel the need to ask others and see what their experience is:
When shooting full power 3" #4 birdshot (don't' ask, its just what I had on hand), it was noted that the breech would open up a good ½ way presumedly due to recoil. Subsequent cycles of the action would bring out the spent shell, but occasionally drop the fresh one, instead of cycling it in. I am happy to avoid the full power 3" shells (hard on the hand at the forend...couldn't feel the shock in the shoulder much, really nice stock!), but that brings us to the next item:
Lest we think that a short shuck is solely responsible, even when shooting "regular" 2-3/4 target loads, it was noted that a shell would occasionally drop. I had a friend shoot while I watched the action, and there didn't SEEM to be any short-shucking involved.
Extraction seems relatively consistent. We shot a good 100 shells off that day, and I think it failed to extract one maybe two? Very few. I know that extraction can be an issue with the Mav. And have seen it specifically with Federal shells for some reason.
One of my fellow shooters believes that the elevator on my shotty is missing some pieces. I checked several months ago, and couldn't find any other Mossy or Mav that has a "full elevator", but perhaps I was just not paying attention.
Below you will find a picture of the elevator as installed. If anyone could look at their Maverick or Mossy and verify that that is what THEY have, I would be eternally grateful. Numrich doesn't have an illustration for this part itself, and I can't find a picture of it isolated out anywhere.
History: When I bought Zoey about 6 months ago (95$) I took it apart, oiled it good, cleaned out a BUNCH of gunk, dried everything off carefully and then reassembled. I grease the forend itself where it contacts the barrel, but otherwise, there is no massive buildup of lube inside. After shooting, I clean out the barrel, then use cotton swabs throughout the action to get any weirdness.
Any ideas what I was doing wrong, and/or, is there something missing from Zoey the Mav?
