Found a bunch of these when decapping some range brass, and have never seen these before. Found an old thread from 2019 and I guess these are Russian and not to reload these. Odd they have a ledge up towards the top of the case. I also found some that didn't have the ledge in the casing and they looked like normal 9mm brass. Not sure what the purpose is unless it's for bullet setback, anyways though I would share the pictures for anyone else that has never seen them like myself. Been reloading 9mm for about 10 years now and this is a first for me,

Yeah, I've seen a few of those and promptly discarded them to the recycle pile. Ditto for the old Aquila with a similar but less pronounced step. I believe it is a device to prevent bullet setback from repeated chambering or recoil.

I'd bounce them as well. I've done so in the past and read somewhere that they can separate at the shelf.

Better to be safe than sorry!

What I found interesting today while still resizing 9mm brass was I found some of these MAXX TECH brass to be normal, as in not any ledge inside the case. They looked just like any other brass so it seems like they had different cases, some had the ledge and some did not.

I came across a bucket full at gun show cheap.
The ridge is to prevent set back. I loaded them
Hs6 and left the empty’s on the range.
Not worth messing with. I’d toss them

Typically, I'd say crush them with a vice or channel locks, toss them in the scrap bucket. But now...after the last couple of years, I may be inclined to throw them in a separate container just in case I need them for the great shortage of '28:eek:

I have found a couple here and there, but I have so much other 9MM brass I scrap them.

They can be used of course, don't seat the base of the bullet deeper than the ledge, which can limit you, and realize the case capacity is less which means we'll have to adjust the max charge down. How much? Hard to say. How bad do you need 9MM cases?

I’ve had the same experience. I recycle the stepped case, but reloaded the “normal” looking case and they seem to perform as well as any other range brass. I’ve not tried to reload the stepped case, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t perform adequately and as others have said you just need to work up a load and make sure you’ll be able to achieve your COL.
It’s interesting that a lot of these oddities show up when there are shortages. Good luck with the reloading.

The stepped brass will be going into the recycle bin for sure, but I may have missed some of the "Normal" brass in my reloading pile. Will have to keep an eye out for them for sure,

9MM brass is so cheap and plentiful that I scrap those. I never even tried to load them, just straight to the recycle bucket. But I have found some of their brass that doesn't have that ledge and they load fine.

The consensis seems to be "scrap bucket fodder". The reduced capacity would necessitate a complete load work up and consideration of where the step is and will it interfere wirh bullet seating depth. I haven't seen any in my area...

I haven't loaded them but have been saving them. I was thinking about starting very low with a powder like bullseye say 2 grains. With cast bullets and Chrono them work up from there. Imagine getting them to work good with something like 3 grains. You'll save a lot of powder if you shoot a lot. Of course care must be taken with an experiment like that. I have brass to last a lifetime. But the experimenter in me wonders about this. If I do it I'll report back. I do like the idea of not worrying about bullet setback as well.

I have a few but I too have plenty of brass but why not load them. Take a few measurements to make sure bullet will be at or above the shelf and just load as normal. I doubt a charge of powder will go above the shelf anyway.

Double charge isn’t the issue. It’s the reduction of internal capacity and the resulting increase in pressure. If you have a hot load based on a full capacity case and you use it in a case with significantly reduced internal capacity pressure is going to spike.

Now more curious. The shelf is thin and I haven't measured but I doubt that it significantly reduces the case capacity.
