You all may remember a couple of months back I had to shoot a charging pit bull and was less than satisfied with the penetration provided by our issue low recoil buckshot. Well, last week I had inservice training and was issued new ammo for the shotgun. We have changed over to the new Federal Tactical buckshot with Flite Control wad. There was no mention of it made from the range staff, but when I looked at the box where our old ammo said "reduced recoil" the new stuff says "Maximum." I asked one of the range staff and he said they weren't telling anyone about the change because so far no one had noticed the difference in recoil and they didn't want people already afraid of the shotgun to worry about the change. The new stuff is obviously a bit warmer than the old load and patterns "VERY" nicely out of our little 14 inch guns. Hopefully, terminal results will be a bit better.

Incidentally, I got my letter from Inspectional Services stating the shooting was justified and that I would not be charged departmentally or criminally. It only took them a month and a half. Even as clean as my shooting was, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't relieved when it got here. The city has made some "odd" decisions lately in the name of insulating itself from any percieved liability. I won't go further in an open forum, but our administration has begun treating officers as expendable assets.

Great news! Glad you have better ammo and that you were cleared in the shooting.

Can't say I'm surprised at this. Glad you didn't get fired because of that tendency.

Glad to hear that you won't be further burdened by your bureaucracy in regards to the shooting. I know (having been a denizen of the Federal bureaucracy in a previous life) how living with the anticipated consequences of a decision like that can be.

The Federal loads are really good stuff- glad to hear your department has upgraded. Maybe now that they've sampled 'the good stuff' they won't ever go back to lesser ammo.

Stay safe,
