For the third time since May, Montgomery County Police are investigating a crime in which a group of at least three Asian men forced their way into the Potomac home of an Asian resident at gunpoint, tied up the resident, and ransacked the home.

In the latest incident Thursday, six Asian men forced their way into a home on Longacres Preserve Court off River Road near Blockhouse Point Conservation Park at 1:40 p.m. after a 72-year-old Asian woman answered her door, thinking she was greeting a cleaning crew. One of the suspects displayed a handgun and tied up the victim as the men went through the home.

The expected cleaning crew found the victim a short time later, and called police. The victim suffered bruising, but was not treated for her injuries. The Gazette does not release the names of crime victims.

The suspects were Asian with short, dark hair, 20-30 years old, 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 3 inches tall, and 120-130 pounds. One suspect wore a dark T-shirt and pants, while another wore a white T-shirt with red and blue stripes. The suspects spoke to the victim in Mandarin Chinese.

The men face charges including armed robbery, theft, use of a handgun in the commission of a violent felony, and conspiracy burglary and theft.

Police have yet to determine the value of the stolen goods or what was taken, would not confirm or deny if the incident was gang-related, and have not linked it to any other crimes.

But the invasion is one of three in Potomac reported since May. Officers have been investigating the possibility that the other two, one on May 10 and one on July 5, were related, said Officer Joyce M. Utter, a Montgomery County Police spokeswoman.

"They are treating each individual case on their own merit," Utter said. "...Anything is a possibility right now; they are not excluding anything."

A group of about five Asian men invaded a home on Scotch Broom Court off South Glen Road behind Normandie Farm restaurant at 8:45 p.m. May 10 when a resident answered the door. In that instance, a suspect displayed a handgun and the group ransacked the house, taking cash and jewelry. Police would not confirm the value of the stolen items.

The suspects were 19-23 years old, 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, and spoke Vietnamese and Mandarin with what the victims recognized as a Taiwanese accent. The victim was also Asian.

In the third crime, three Asian men forced their way into a home on Camille Drive in Potomac at 9 p.m. July 5 as the homeowner answered the door. The victim was also Asian.

One suspect was 28-30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and 160-170 pounds; the second suspect was 28-30 years old, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, and 170-180 pounds; and the third suspect was 28-30 years old, and 6 feet to 6 feet 1 inch tall. The suspects all spoke Chinese, and stole more than $500 in goods and currency.

The victims were not injured in either crime.

Police are asking residents to exercise care when answering the door at any time of day. Also, police are encouraging homeowners to place large sums of money and jewelry in banks or other institutions outside of the home.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call police at 240-773-5100 or Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-800-673-2777. Crime Solvers is offering a up to $1,000 for information that leads to the indictment of the suspects responsible for the crimes.

One interesting factoid I remember hearing is that some Asian cultures are leary of using banks (I think the Vietnamese were mentioned specifically), so they typically keep lots of money at home, thus the large number of Asian on Asian home invasions.
