HEADLINE: Double shooting leaves one dead
BYLINE: Staff Report
BODY:
An attempted home invasion robbery early Saturday left one of the suspects dead and a man in the home in critical condition, police said.
According to Chattanooga police spokesman C.W. Joel, three men kicked in the front door of a house at 1619 S. Orchard Knob Ave. at 2 a.m. and began to rob those in the house at gunpoint.
During the robbery, police said, resident Pascual Gomez was shot in the head by one of the robbers. Another resident ran into a back room for a gun and shot one of the home invaders several times, according to police officials.
The suspect who was shot was found dead in the front yard of a nearby home near the corner of Orchard Knob and 17th Street, according to police reports. He was identified by police as 19-year-old Christopher Leon Benn.
"Because of the death of Benn, we have records of some of his known associates," Mr. Joel said.
Police have interviewed suspects, but a lack of information from victims has kept police from making any arrests, he said.
Saturday's robbery was likely tied to several recent home invasions, Mr. Joel said.
Mr. Gomez was listed in critical condition at Erlanger hospital with a head wound.
Police said no charges have been filed against the resident who shot the robbery suspect. Mr. Joel described the fatal shooting as self-defense.
