The old saying "ignorance is bliss" sure is true.
A few years ago I bought a XD9. It's totally reliable and handles great. The trigger needed some help so I installed a Powder River kit which resulted in a greatly improved dead nuts accurate pistol.
Then I started looking around the internet where the pros
hang out and man did I find out how stupid I'd been. Sheez I didn't even know that it was a Glock copy. So as a result of all the knowledge I've gotten from the internet about XDs, I've had to take some drastic actions.
The first thing I did was put some black friction tape on that "Made in Croatia" line. I thought about buying one of those little label maker thingies and crank out a tape that said " Made in Austria", but I knew I couldn't fool the
pros. I just sorta hope my friction tape cover up might fool some of the new guys at the range.
The next thing I did was go to Kmart and get one of those plastic milk crates to stand on because lots of the people in the know talk about the "high bore axis". I think that's a technical term, anyway I wanted to compensate for it.
Since I now found out what a mistake I'd made, I had a tee shirt printed up that said " I'm sorry I should have bought a Glock instead of this stupid copy". By the way while I was at Kmart I bought a tennis ball to squeeze
so I could build up my hand strength in order to activate the grip safety. ( I tried a cue ball but it didn't seem to work very well). Boy the gip safety in the 1911 must really be easy because I never read about people complaining about them; but then after all that is the perfect gun, I think I read because it's a 100 years old. I keep my tennis ball and ear plugs and stuff in my milk crate.
Because something called a "striker retainer pin" frequently breaks and flies out, I wear my full face motorcycle helmet along with industrial strength safety glasses. You just can't be too safe, especially since the "cocked indicator pin" could come loose and hit you in the face.
So anyway here I am at the range one day standing on my milk crate with my full face helmet on , squeezing my tennis while I warm up to shoot, when all of a sudden it hits me: if this really is a copy of a Glock it could blow up. I think the technical term is "kaboom", so right then and there I stopped, stepped down and left the range in search of kevlar body armor.
Only one more problem and that's the loaded chamber indicator. Man that thing chaps a lot of the guys in the know. Folks i've got to be honest with you, while I'm shooting I don't even see it, except on Thursdays. You see on Thursdays is when I practice my 90 degree angle shooting, I see it then but I just overlook it.
So you see when I was ignorant I was really happy and content with my XD, but now that I've learned all the problems I might just have to get rid of it.
Anyway if any of you are at the range and see a guy down at the last station standing on a milk crate with a full face (Shoei) helmet and kevlar body armor on with a pistol that has black friction tape on it - that's me - just give me a wave and I'll be glad to tell you some of the stuff I've learned on the internet

I hear S&W has good deals on Sigmas these days! :D

You think you have it bad as an XD owner (I have a couple myself), way back when I bought my first polymer pistol, I did a lot of research and was surprised to find a certain brand that reportedly descended from above actually had a few warts. As such (and based on the way it fit my hand), I walked out with a Sigma! :uhoh:

As fer the detractors...after a while, you learn to pay 'em no nevermind...

If you are serious then wow :p but I imagine this is a bit of a joke as I can't imagine a single soul wearing all of that stuff willingly! If it was truly a problem I would have sold the thing long ago.

That said, I love my XD, specifically all the features on it that people complain about (Grip safety, etc etc etc) and I actually like the trigger far more than I like either the Glock or M&P triggers. It makes me itch to shoot mine... I've got to hold off till sunday!

Don't let it get to ya! Keep one thing in mind, more new pistol owners buy Glocks than any other pistol. Gunforums and Law Enforcement are most likely the reason. After a shooter has matured a bit other pistols begin to draw their interest. There are more Glock fans here than anywhere outside of Glock Talk. What discourages me is that XD owners almost seem like apologists to the Glock horde. I like the way you satired your post.

I owned three Glocks previously and I own 0 today. I am the proud owner of an XDm, the .45 ACP model and in comparison to the Glock 21 It has:

A conventionally rifled Match Grade barrel. No need to buy aftermarket. Polygonal boring has no advantage. The velocity increase claim is a fraud.

Better chamber support in any caliber. I don't like Ka-Booms and I don't care what generation you're talking about. We had one reported here on the forum just a few weeks back if you want to search. Gen 4 G-22.

Better sights than the retarded plastic U-dot.

Better out of the box trigger. Modify either but with a Powder River kit in my XDm I don't lust after a 1911 trigger, mine is a s good as it gets with no overtravel.

Interchangeable back-straps that allow you to fit the pistol to your hand without the offbeat Glock grip angle.

And one of my biggest peaves, Glock does not relieve the ejection port on their pistols and I can't think of any other manufacturer that doesn't relieve ejection ports (Maybe Hi-Point?) that's why you get that triangular scar on the casemouth.

The majority of Glock owners I encounter are not handloaders and some of these issues may not matter to them but they matter to me. I also considered the fine M&P in .45 ACP but for a same size pistol to carry three less rounds in the magazine it was a no-brainer. ;)

FWIW, I bought an XD as my first gun, then an M&P, and now I only carry Glocks. Your suggestion that a "shooter [who] has matured a bit" begins to become interested in other pistols is somewhat insulting. YMMV

[I no longer own the XD or M&P.]

Great post. I too learned about all the "problems" with my XDm9 on the internet, but then I also learned that Clint Smith carries an XD so I just smile now.

You guys are right in the sense that the same old worn out junk seems to show up in any post about XDs. The funny part about this whole thing is I got rid of a Glock in order to get the XD. Nothing wrong with my Glock I just liked the XD better, but one thing I don't do is fall out and foam at the mouth if someone says they own a Glock.

Great post...very funny. I love my XD 45 Compact and I've never had any problems with it. The internet can be a great tool for gaining information and researching a purchase but there's also no sort of filter or fact checker built in, so some common sense is required. Whenever I ask about a gun online and hear a negative comment, I always be sure to try to get the first hand story (not the, "I heard from my cousin that his friend had X problem"). In any manufatured good, there's going to be a few that have issues and with the internet, your going to hear about those few with the issues many times (ie one reported case of a certain problem and everyone repeats it until it seems to be a wide spread problem). Anyways, sorry for rambling, because I'm sure you gents all know the above. I really love my VD but for what it's worth my father loves his Glock and we both shoot better with our preferred gun and have a ball doing so.

The XD is a $300 Croatian pistol with another $300 of Springfield marketing on top.

I have an XD bi-tone 45 acp with the springer precision trigger job that breaks at 4lband tack up and reset is 1/16" heavy stainless solid guide rod, extended mag release and Polly mag well, with extended arradendo high cap extension 16+1 round I've only shot 600 230g double tap bonded ammo to prove reliability and it's my bed side gun. soft shooting gun can make golf size target holes at 25 yards, the fire control is single action unlike the Glock which is double action and feels like a 2x4 grip. It used to bother me that the XD's are Croatian.

But the more and more I handle them, I don't care. I really like them.

They fit me better than any other poly pistol out there. Period.

    I want an XDm in 9mm. I just don't know if I want a 4.5" barrel or the 3.8.
