Mechanical Scale Question

Unfortunately in 2023, if you want an Ohaus made 5-0-5 or similar beam scale, it will be made in China as they are no longer made in USA -

I don’t think I was the first owner of any of my favorite beam scales.

Where do you suppose all of the cheap consumer grade digital scales are manufactured these days?

I have the same scale, and it does have a way to adjust the time it remains on. I think the longest it will stay on is three minutes. I don't remember how I did it, but do a search on youtube for adjusting the new model scale and you'll find it. IIRC it has three time settings, but the auto-off feature can't be disabled as far as I know.

There's a G2-1500 which can be adjusted. I haven't seen a way to adjust the GS-1500. I'll look again.

Does it go off if it's has some weight on the scale?

If Not, after you weight put your cal weight on till the next time needed. But you probably have already tried that.

I haven't tried that, but will later today.

Edit to Add: I tried it, and it still turns off with weight on the scale.

This is the same as several others except for color. All you need. Made by Ohaus in China

IMHO, you may grow weary of this scale in a very short time.

The issue is that the Minor Poise only goes up to Five, but our number system is based on Ten. This means you'll need to look over and see where the Major Poise is hanging to get your full reading. In other words, if the Minor Poise is hanging on "2", you really can't be sure if the scale is setup for "2" or "7". The difference between 2 and 7 may not mean that much in Rifle, but for Handguns it's a critical difference.

IMHO, the better scales have a Minor Poise that is based on Ten's. In this way you can read the correct weight directly. I'm not saying this sale doesn't have accuracy or repeatability. What I'm saying is that having to check and adjust two poise is an invitation for the introduction of human error.

And I'm an acclaimed expert at 1) being human, and 2) making errors. :D

I have been using the Dillion Eliminator version for many years, I works just fine

The minor goes up to 1.0

I believe last of the made in USA beam scale was Dillon Eliminator but that too has been discontinued with manufacturing moving to China likely due to competition from digital scales with higher resolution at lower pricing.

I can see the benefit of beam scale not turning off like digital scale.

At this point, regardless whether beam or digital scale is used, if scale verifies check weights in the same weight range being used, I believe it is good enough.

And of course, set of check weights is essential to verifying scale accuracy and this made in USA Troemner set is only $18 - https://www.amazon.com/Troemner-1512-111-50GN-0-5GN-Certificate-Stainless/dp/B078H4P55D/ref=sr_1_1?

What are you quoting me? I said they are made in China. I have a older Dillio Eliminator which was made ins USA I also have the China RCBS they both work the same.

I would like everything we use to be made here, but it's reality, The Chinese are very good at rocket science.

I thought mine was a GS-1500, although it may be the G2 version. It came in my kit when I started loading about 4 1/2 years ago. I looked at it and it doesn't say so I assumed it was the original version.

I was agreeing with you that now Ohaus made and others such as RCBS beam scales are all made in China.

And since OP already bought a scale, I suggested a set of check weights, which BTW is made in USA.

Thanks. I just ordered the check weights.

Yes, those check weights are the best deal in weights. The name brand ones are crazy price, for reloading these are more than sufficient.

Seems like we just had a thread on these:rofl:
