So this is what I have been waiting for. This is called an ARES rifle and they are being made in Amelia, OH by a small FFL dealer/manufacturer. The stock, grips, optic, color and engraving were all selected by me. The lower is a CNC machined 7075 billet that is basically mil-spec.

The upper is a 100% custom design by the owner operator of The FFL. It is all 7075 cnc machined as well. It uses no off the shelf parts and everything is his design. It is piston driven, however it is all contained in the upper, using no buffer and no buffer spring (yes the tube is empty). The BCG is his design as well as the barrel. The barrel is pinned to the lower receiver through the front take down pin to improve accuracy. I also have a 20" barrel for 300 blackout that is easily swapped into the gun in about 2 minutes.

I wonder how long it is going to be before Ares Defense wades in and forces a name change?

I would like to know more about his piston design. Based upon my research, the PWS MK116 I own is the pinnacle of piston choices out there. I doubt I would get buyer's remorse since it works so darn well, but I'm always interested in alternative designs.

Prices vary depending on options. Mine was $2100 with both barrels that are heavy barrels, full engraving with my name and all and metallic blue duracoat with clear.

Proprietary designs are great till, they go outta business, death, etc.

Ran 60 rounds through it today. After adjusting the gas block it was a wonderful smooth shooter. Didn't have much time to play at distance yet but it was nice not hearing that buffer spring after every shot!!

It looks like the top rail is quite a bit taller than an AR... it looks like it needs HK-height sights and optics. How is cheek weld with that AR-height scope?

Speaking of the scope, whats up with putting that cheap of an optic on that expensive of a rifle?! :D

So what does it look like on the inside? From the outside and the lack of a recoil spring in the tube it sounds like Rock Rivers Piston gun.

$2100 rifle, $40 optic.... Interesting, but I would stock up on extra parts before they are no longer made. Looks kind of like a paintball gun.:D And, it neeeeds a folding stock.

You caught me lol....I'm waiting on my optic to arrive so I threw that one on to see what it would look like. The cheek well is just fine, I was worried about height too but I'm a big guy (6'6" and 365lbs) so it works great for me. I didn't weigh it as weight it not an immediate concern for me as its a target gun and will see a bench a time or two not hunting duty. That's why I opted for the heavy barrels.
