Interesting thing just happened to me yesterday.

Not too long ago, a retired couple moved into a home for sale in our community. My parents had met them, and they have been around in the community-- even though they are still in the throughs of Moving Hell. But I haven't had the chance to introduce myself and say hi.

Yesterday, I was returning from the UPS Store to satisfy a trade I made on THR and I saw them both outside unpacking. Because they have a nice privacy screen of unique bamboo, and I am in the process of planting a similar privacy screen, I thought I'd stop by and talk Bamboo.

Though the course of our conversation, I let it slip that I am a strong advocate of the 2nd Amendment. Mr. & Mrs. M. gave each other a "knowing" glance to one another and looked back to me. They explained to me that they are strongly involved in the RKBA struggle and are Range Officers in a shooting range not too far away.

The conversation moved through many areas-- including their offer to assist me in constructing a berm on the range I am putting on my land for private and community use.

We spoke of collections, Concealed carry, books we've read, the D.C handgun ban case, and dark roast coffee.

Both he and his wife are very informed on the legislative actions dealing with the RKBA and are current in the politics that affect it.

After mentioning THR to them, both are joining THR as soon as they have their computer set up (its in ONE of these boxes somewhere!)

I post this as both an introduction-- whatever their screen names will be, but also as a tale of unexpected benefits of taking the time to get to know those around us. I think I am fortunate that I haphazardly gained the friendship of kindred spirits as they become part of my local community. I think that I could have easily missed this chance if I was more worried about the gallon of milk in my back seat and hurried along home.

At any rate, I thought I'd share.

goodie :D

always nice to have likeminded people to talk to.

(hopefully they can deal with the caliber arguments and semi-revolotionary discussions going on here xD)

That's a great story about neighbors. It's also a good change from "my neighbors are the spawn of satan" threads we see too often. :D

If you get a chance, try some "Aged Sumatra" coffee if you can find it. I have to buy it from a roaster in Austin...it's worth it.

You, sir, have peaked my interest!

And you are right....it is great that I don't have to post on of those %$^&% neighbors thread here. I like 'em so much I decided that they should be our neighbors here as well!

that's great!

I don't know what my neighbors think of the 2A. I know one neighbor hates me (afterall, I did pull his cable feed out of the ground so he has no TV anymore, but then again in my defense, he was stealing my cable and had no right to dig a hole in my yard to drop some coaxial cable into and hook up to the feed that I pay for). So I can't ask him.

On the other side is a family that keeps to themselves. They have 2 boats, an awesome dog, and are very nice, but I don't get the impression that they are 2A types at all, plus they're originally from some S. American country (not sure which).

Excellent! They balance of power now shifts to your neighborhood!

This is refreshing to hear, as usually the stories around here at least seem to be about "uptight Antis" moving next door, complaining about target shooting noises and the children in the area being at risk.

Type stuff...

Just the otherday, I got my neighbor's "American Rifleman" and he got my "First Freedom" We switched and went on about our day. I almost wonder if the mailman did that intentionally.

I think I get something gun related in my box every day. :D

My neighbors are all nice and I don't have any problems with any of them, but I don't know if any of them are pro-RKBA, though I have my suspicions about a few of them.

OT, I know, but I do like a good aged Sumatra, too. I buy my coffee from a roaster in MA from his site.

The Aged Sumatra Mandheling is quite good, and I REALLY like the Kenyan coffees he roasts. The price is about on par with the stuff from Starbucks(YEECCHHH).

Nice, I thought this was going to be a story like in the 'burbs.
That would have been a pretty fun neigborhood to live in. Bruce Dern and Corey Feldman would have been great neighbors to have! Imagine if Burt and Heather Gummer moved in after they had to leave their place in the desert that was destroyed by the giant worms.

Nice!
My neighbors don't speak English, for the most part, play mariachi music at all hours, LOUD, and seem to have plenty of vehicles that move in and out at all hours, with nobody apparently going to and from work. All the newer homes are going to people who have no discernable income, except for one nice lady right next door. The only rights they are "fighting for" is the "everything free for them at my expense" rights.

My mailman probably hates me because I get flat-rate boxes full of bullets delivered to the house. Most weigh in excess of 60lbs.

Same goes for the UPS guy and cases of M43.

bogie,

Absolutely. I was doing some reading on-line about various species of bamboo.

Some are hearty enough to live in as cold as -10 degree F.

Some do better in direct sunlight, and others prefer less. But from my experiece, you really need several hours of sunlight per day on the ones you'd want for a privacy screen.

To really kick-start it, you need to plant in the winter or early spring, and fertilize it in the early spring once, in the summer once, and in the fall once.

Also, make sure you get running bamboo rather than "clumping" bamboo to create a thick wall. There are ways to prevent the rhizomes from growing into areas you don't want spread to reach.

I am using Chinese Yellow-Tip bamboo (I think) for the job. It will make a thick screen within 3 years, and grows to approximately 35 feet high.

I'll look up some sites that I found.

Neighbors can be good to know.

When my wife and I decided to get our CCWs, we needed to provide references. We are friendly with all our neighbors, but don't really socialize. When we asked them (next door and across the street) to serve as references, we were a bit nervous about what their reactions might be.

All they said was, "Serve as references for your CCWs? Of course. Good idea."

I find it immensely gratifying that we RKBA advocates are always networking, whereas the Antis never seem to get organized. Yeah, they'll occasionally do a fundraiser and get well-meaning donations on a streetcorner or something, but they're not even remotely as likely to be strongly involved or participate at grassroots levels.

Yay us.

My neighbors are great. Both sons (one at home and one who lives up the road) love to shoot, skeet, targets, both hunt, the old man (their term for him) joins them occasionaly. From time to time I will head over and bring a few to join in with them. They are great folks, polite, kind, and they help watch my place, just like I help watch theirs!

Every week or two we hear rifle fire coming from across the street. Neighbor is in his back yard with the AR or SKS. Sometimes it's from my son-in-law down the street.

Gotta make you proud to live in America.

That's one of the reasons I moved where I am now. It's a long drive to work but you can't help but smile when you hear 8 shot strings from a 1911 in one direction and 30 rounds from an AK in another. Sometimes I'll start shooting and it's like various neighbors decide to answer with their own pops :)
Glad you've got some great neighbors and hope they'll feel welcome at THR!
