I'm posting this on Johns behalf:
*******************************************************

Gentlemen/Ladies,

As most of you know, 1911forum.com is down for almost three or four days now. I tried e-mailing Jason, the web master and got nothing.

As you also know, M1911.ORG is affiliated with 1911forum.com, in the sense that there is an agreement between me and Jason, to include links in each and every page, to point to the other site, in order to make the user-navigation as easy as possible.

In that sense, the 1911forum.com site, plays the role of the forum site for M1911.ORG.

Since the day the forums are down, I have received plenty of e-mails asking me for what's going on. Since I am as much in the dark as anyone else, I feel awful. I just can't stand that part of my site, even if it is not exactly my site, is down and I can do nothing about it.

So I was thinking to ask the good folks who are hosting M1911.ORG to setup a forum of my own. Now, this is obviously not an easy job, it would require a lot of work from these nice people and obviously from me, so here is what I want to ask you:

- Would you guys be interested in such a forum?
- For those of you who are already registered in 1911forum.com, would you consider moving over the the new forum?

Obviously, I'll consult with you in the future, about which things you want to see there etc., but at the time being, what I want to know is if you think that the effort required to put such a thing on the net is worth it.

Please send me your thoughts.

Rgds

The 1911 Forum is a daily MUST read for me. It's inspired me to chronicle the saga of my new Kimber...from out of the box through the next several thousand rounds.

I also spend alot of time reading your site (and I'd love to see a gunsmithing HOWTO section, complete with detailed procedural pictures. Also with "basic" things like how to use stones, etc).

Would it be possible for you to make a mirror of the 1911 Forum? It would have to be updated nightly, but that's possible to do. Then, if the regular forum goes down, you could switch it on. It'll take a bit of work, but putting it on a linux server make this possible.

count me in

i also have to get my daily 1911 fix and have been :( since it is not up any more, i would gladly join another 1911 forum

I already joined the one mentioned by Bluesbear in the post above. I'd almost be willing to try something new over the "walking on eggshells" that many of us felt we had to do on 1911 forum.

If you have a new 1911 forum, do it without the Nazi storm trooper mods, I have never seen such overbearing power tripping manhandling goons that think its necessary to treat folks the way they deem appropriate.

Good by to such baloney.

Bound to bite them on the butt sooner or later.

I think it depends on whether the original is coming back. If it is, I don't want to break up the group into a half-dozen similar forums. The two things that make 1911forum.com so good are the existing user base and the familiar collection of categories. The former is the most important thing.

We were lucky that when TFL went down, most folks migrated to THR instead of all over the place.

If the original is gone, it sounds like you'd be in the ideal position to mirror the old one, as if nothing happened. That would be ideal.

do it without the Nazi storm trooper mods,
As one of the Mods on the new 1911OwnersGroup, I can assure you we are not storm troopers.

I think you'll find it a pleasant place to be.
We are all very approachable and open minded.

Give us a try.

hey!

You bet...I'd be there in heartbeat...I'm with you John...

do it without the Nazi storm trooper mods,

As a long time member of the m1911.org - I don't think all the moderators there were "Nazi storm troopers". The addition of those few that could be put in that bucket appeared to a recent event, sometime over the last 6 months things got very bad there. "Politics and Legal" was one of the worst moderated lists I've seen. I'd stopped posting/replying to items there it'd gotten so bad.
I hope John takes the time to read this and the other thread that was started regarding the forum he own(ed).

Moderation is a dirty job, especially when some members lack self-moderation, but someone has got to do it. I think most everyone agrees that most of the 1911Forum moderators were reasonable and did their thankless job well, so I wouldn't generalize and call them all Nazis. But there were a couple that should've been demoted.

Bluesbear, thank you for the invite...already figured that one out and have signed in without any problems...so, I know the old storm troopers ain't there anymore. They would have bared the door on me like they had been doing for the past few years.

Man, you talk about holding a grudge them guys got a real hate on for anyone who trys to speak their mind in a civil manner. I'm talking about the Fort Bragg oriental dude in particular.

Glad things are better now, too many people must have complained about their assinine tactics, that's why it sort of just drifted away eventually.

I wish the new 1911 forum the best of luck, and hope the reloading section gets back up on a par with what it use to be a few years ago. Thats all I'm interested in anyway...to hell with trying to speak your mind on subjects of injustice and politics.

1911forum was the first gun forum I joined. I love my 1911's and found their forum very informative. Unfortunately, the Naziesque attitude of one moderator caused me to leave and rarely return.

I'll check out your site, BB.

I think we all have the same moderator in mind when the complaints about 1911 forum moderating are discussed. Have any of you wrote the admin of the board? As soon as it comes back online I'm going to email him about the moderator I think shouldn't be doing the job. I've never really thought about giving the owner of the board feedback about his moderators, until now. Maybe there's a lot of 1911 forum members who share similar feelings about this particular moderator, and we just need to let the admin know?

Have any of you wrote the admin of the board?
I have never considered it necessary to write admin as they know about the situation and have chose to do nothing about it. However, if I see him raise his head in another forum, I will surely do as you suggest and contact admin. It's a shame he sheds such a dim light on our neighbors to the north.

I don't get why not just wait to see what happened to the server and see if we can get 1911forums back? I assume it's a technical issue, and hopefully all the old threads are there intact. Or are there financial issues involved?

The key is the knowledge that's already at the forum....even we setup shop somewhere else, the knowledge will perculate surely but slowly, but it'll take a long time.

Even if it takes a week, a month, it'd be worth it try to preserve the old forum. Look at Firiingline and all the old data is still there.

nobody seems to know why the site is down. I assume that somebody knows who the admin is and has e-mailed him. We've heard nothing and been given no information about what is going on with the forum.

I'm irritated the the admin there has given us no information and that's enough to keep me away if I can find a good replacement.

Members,

Good news! The forum will be back online Monday evening. I apologize for the downtime. I was investigating a possible security breach on the server. After careful examination, everything has checked out and we are set to re-open the forums tomorrow.

The email system, however, is in disarray. I am backlogged over one month, so please sit tight as I work to answer your emails.

Thanks again for your patience!

-Jason

I, for one, will be going to the NEW 1911 forum.......for the exact same reasons stated in the above posts.

I just registered and it looks good, but I sure hope it gets faster. Those pages are taking forever to load for me, and I'm using cable! :)
