I recently came into an AR upper with a linear comp on it. It looks like the guy who owned it before tried to pin the comp on to make it 16". First thing is its not welded, so it would still be a SBR. Second is the pin goes through both sides of the comp and protrudes across the bottom of the barrel maybe a 1/64, but is obviously going to interfere with the bullet going by. I'm guessing its not safe to fire and the barrel is pretty much screwed. Will get a pic in a little bit but am I thinking correct?

Pic would help. If you're saying the pin is protruding INSIDE the bore, that will make for a very bad day if you shoot it.

Yep in the bore about 1/4" from the end. Best pic I could get. Good thing I didn't get out and shoot it right away like I wanted to

Probably nothing much.
Bore pressure is fairly low by that point in the barrel.

But you sure wouldn't hit anything after the bullet came apart right out of the muzzle.

Well wasn't as dangerous as I'd have guessed then. Contacted the guy I got it from to see what he has to say. Don't really want to drop a lot more money on it to get it cut and re threaded but I'll see. Thanks guys

toss it. good news is that you can get a barrel real cheap. I know there are better options, and there may be cheaper options, but I know you can get one from sportsmans guide for like 80 bucks after coupon code.

WOW. It would be funny if it were so bad. As said, it looks like a candidate for a pistol barrel. Have it cut and rethreaded.

Send it to adco and have it cut. They'll do it for $60 which includes cutting, crowning and rethreading.
You could even send in another brake (longer?) and have them pin it correctly so the barrel meets the 16" requirements for a title 1 rifle.

Or, donate it to me and I'll build it into another SBR.

Well I talked to the guy I got it from, who actually builds and sells ARs, and said he got it in a trade then traded it to me not noticing. I was under the impression he built it himself, but whatever the case may be, he said he'd get a new barrel of whatever length I wanted and put it on for me. So, I'm going to take him up on that offer and it should some out good in the end.

Seriously, I'm working on a pistol build and will take it off your hands. I think I can work around the damage. PM me if you are willing to let it go.

You've got to be kidding me. I can't believe anyone would funk up a barrel like that and allow it out of their sight.

With a new barrel and fifteen minutes time you could have a very different rifle set up to your desires. If the goof did that to the barrel what screwy things did he do to the rest of the rifle? What level of quality is the rest? Go buy a Colt 6920, they do not put pins through their barrels.

I am sure they fellow who did it didn't think it was a good idea to run the pin through the bore. They just screwed up. It looks like they stayed on the flat where it was easier to drill, thinking it would clear, but didn't. One of those oh crap moments humans have.

You have had a couple of good options put forth, but with the prices of new barrels lately with the sales going on, that might be a good way to go.
