Met some Russians!

I met a Russian guy at a gun show in Orlando once.
I asked him if he knew why the safety of the Mosin was so hard to operate.

He simply stared at me blankly and said "Iz gun, iz not safe! Cock and shoot!"

Or maybe that was a story I heard. Its been a long time.

Funny.

BTW while growing up over there the only Mosins I ever saw were in museums. May be saw one or two carried by the paramilitary guards on the railway bridges that were considered important enough to protect from a possible "diversion", but not important enough to protect seriously. Most of these guards were probably as old as the guns themselves. The Mosin was a piece of history, pretty much like Enfield. I see many more of them here in States than I ever saw back there. BTW, what (outside of price) makes Mosin more desirable than a good modern hunting rifle with a decent scope ?

It's cheap. Ammo's cheap. Priced any .308 lately?

I just got one and can't wait to shoot it. It's like owning a little bit of history.

And it's cheap.

Spaz- Any chance your in the Milwaukee area? I ask because I've run into a couple of folks from Russia at the range I frequent. Nice people. Excellent shooters. Helped me a lot with my AK shooting (not trying to stereotype. One of the guys is Ex-USSR Military).

People at the range can be very nice. Unless they sneak in and shoot at the pistol range and pretend that you didnt notice that there is not truck on the inside of the gate but on the side of the road. But Russians are some cool people.

JustinJ:

Even though meeting foreigners at a gun range might not seem like a "gun-related thread", at least fellow Americans who don't read much about geography and history might learn that the Ukraine, Belarus, Baltic countries, Kazakhstan etc were not part of Russia.

And the next time Russia decides to invade Georgia, even more Americans will learn that Atlanta and Macon were never in danger.

Others might finally discover that modern foreign ammo from places such as Russia and Serbia is not corrosive. On second thought, it might help to limit price increases if people continue to assume that foreign = corrosive....

I had two guys installing granite tops on a construction site of mine. I noticed their workmanship was excellent and they had an accent so I ask were they were from and to my surprise they were from Georgia the old Soviet Union. We spoke for a while and they were extremely nice and there work was great.

I literally laughed out loud when I read this. I had a friend ask me one time "when did Russia invade America?" I had to explain the situation.

I've met some of the nicest people at gun ranges, and I seem to have a 99% positive experience while there.

I've gotten to shoot some many other guns that I might not have been able to otherwise. As a result, I always try to pay it forward so that everyone has a nice time at the range. This is important, especially to first timers. I believe that anyone who shoots is an ambassador of gun ownership in a way so everyone wins when people are friendly and courteous.

That being said, I'd love to find some Russians at the range. I'm really into guns from over there and have also learned a thing or two about their culture. Their women are gorgeous as well! And when It tried the food, it was great! Really was.

If you guys ever can, try "kvass" or Квас, it's great cold for hot summer days and has more interesting flavours than your typical soda.

I tried and liked it at a Russian Festival.
