Hi all,

I am looking for a new gun (at the wife's request!) for her to use in her "cocktail" dress. You know when women carry those teeny purses. I was thinking something along the lines of a derringer type 2 shot or a NAA mini with 5 rounds. It HAS to be tiny and 22LR mini mag HP is the round and no semi-autos. She is 5' 2" and 100lbs. Yes I know its a small shot but its something to make the attacker pause and her able to haul ass.

Understand that she usually carries a Stainless S&W Airweight +P .38 with her - pink handle of course. So please no debate on 22's stopping ability! IT's something small or shes unarmed. If we go out together I'll be carrying so this is only for those remote occasions that might happen.

Thanx

If you HAVE to go with a 22 at least go with the NAA, a derringer is hard to shoot and has only two rounds. At least the NAA minirevolver has more ammo and is supposedly slightly easier to shoot.
Of, she could look into a thigh rig for her snub, better to have a better SD gun with her she is already comfortable with, if possible.

For ultra small carry you may consider the Kel Tec P-32. It's very slim and extremely light. I own one, as well as the .380 version. The .32 was very mild in recoil at the range and you get 7 rounds in the magazine. Kel Tec also has very good factory support. Not bad for a gun that can be had under $300.

It HAS to be tiny and 22LR mini mag HP is the round and no semi-autos.

You could probably count the number of guns you're left with on both hands.
Get a mini revolver from NAA or Charter. I'd go with the NAA PUG, and I'd shoot solids.

I know some tiny guns that fit in tiny purses that have respectable calibers. Such as the ruger lcp or kel-tec .380. Why no autos?

If you must go with a tinker toy like a .22 mini-revolver get some high velocity solid points to ensure adequate penetration. A hollowpoint won't even expand with that barrel length so you might as well not even both with that.

yes, I am looking into the pug. Like I said she's small so a thigh rig is just not doable especially with short skirts. Small hands so the small size of the derringer for us is not a problem for her. The reason I say no semi-auto is that she used the carry a 9mm but under stress she just couldn't manipulate it fast enough and she was not comfortable carrying it hot and fooling with the safety. The .38 is no hammer and DAO, she pulls the trigger when she means it and that works good.

I look at the .22LR high velocity round as the same as using an ice pick, last ditch to get the hell away. She carrys the .38 98% of the time, the other 1% Im with her so we are really talking a very small window anyway.

Thanx

Most any DAO with one in the chamber aren't different enough from the DA revolver with a full cylinder so is it more a question of perception or working with a SA/DA auto in condition one?

my bud just bought a 1 1/8" .22 mag NAA pug...the extra bulk of the takedown assembly was causing uit to "bounce" unlocked...very bad...probably wouldn't happen in .22LR as it wouldn't bounce as hard...I'd consider a small keychain sized pepperspray...probably more useful than a micro .22...other than that issue the pug was pretty cool...the sights actually where usefull...unlike my regular minimag combo...which you may as well point shoot!

I agree either go with the NAA, or better yet, get a semi-auto, then you have a much better gun with more options (and more concealable too). Carry one in the chamber, these guns have no safety to worry about, just pull the trigger. P32 would probably be best.

Whatever you get, get a holster so the trigger won't get hung up on anything in the purse. Put velcro on one side of the holster with the other side of the velcro attached to the inside wall of the purse. Then the gun will be exactly where she expects it to be.

The smart money would say use a slightly larger purse and carry the J frame she already has... and is familiar with.
I conceal full sized 1911s and N frame smiths... I refuse to see a J frame being too large for a purse as a legit issue.
Any gun small enough to tuck into a shirt pocket is not to large for off body concealment.

Yes, good points all. We have a gun show coming up and will take her to try out the mini autos. Like I said, she usually has the .38 and I agree its pretty small to begin with. She has become familiar and likes to carry now (nice to live in FL) - feels naked without it almost.

BTW - at our Shotgun match last night I picked up a Stainless Taurus .357 Mag in SS, really good price. Brought it home at told her I got the gun she was looking for ;)

She does want to shoot it, good woman I got!

Anything less than a .38 Spl. and I believe the purse itself would make a better weapon. Especially full of quarters, and on a long strap.

A NAA Mini in her garter.

If she's with you and has a very small handgun to use. Small size + stressful situations + less than reliable ammunition = less than ideal!

You might want to think about some type of knife for a backup if things go south. A lot of knives can be hidden on a woman's body that is socially taboo for most people to stare at.

Just a thought outside of the box...

Seecamp in 32 or 380 might be worth considering.............the 22 mag, whether in derringer or mini revolver is not that accurate or easy to shoot - if she's shoving it in their belly as she's firing, that's one thing - otherwise you might want to rethink things

Any of the NAA options would be a single action requiring the hammer to be cocked before firing is possible. That's an extra step that she is not used to. Due to this I think something in a DA/SA revolver option to more closely match with her background is the way to go. Something like an LCR or equivalent S&W round butt short snubbie barrel.

You might want to check out the micro semi-autos that have a tip up barrel from Beretta or Taurus. Simple to operate with a double action only trigger.

If it must be a .22 revolver then I'd be looking at the NAA models. I have yet to shoot one but when I wrapped two fingers around one I was surprised at the thickness of the grip. My first thought for your situation was a Kel-Tec P-32. It's a little more powerful than a .22. It's the thinnest gun I've found. And the trigger is a lot like a DA revolver. I was looking at the NAA revolver for front pocket carry but it just hasn't convinced me to buy it yet. My P-32 does get carried in a back pocket from time to time although an LCP typically gets first right of refusal in pocket carry situations.

BTW, the folks that mention a tiny 380 like the KelTec or Ruger LCP are on the right track

Very flat and easy to conceal

Thoughts on the NAA Mini

First and foremost - do not get a derringer for your wife.

I'm an average sized guy (just under 6') with average sized hands (medium gloves) - and I carry the NAA Mini 22LR with me everywhere I go BUT it is a last ditch CCW. One must carry it with that knowledge in the forefront. It is a weapon where I would shoot and run like hell.

I have other firearms available to me during the day but I carry the NAA on my person pretty much 24x7. Heck even right now while as I'm typing away. You can even get it with a factory lanyard loop to fit on a key chain or neck lanyard.

The NAA is hard to handle and I don't mean recoil. You have to practice with it. The single action under duress can be disastrous if one is not well practiced with it. Then there is also the issue of rimfire. The cartridges MUST be changed at least once a month and even more during the warmer months.

Has your wife handled the Kel Tec P32? It is ultra slim and light and it holds 7+1 and can be belt clipped or worn around the neck with the lanyard kit. It will also fit inside a clutch purse very nicely - for the cocktail dress situations. One can also carry in a Day-Timer or note pad portfolio.
