Was thinking about a mid to low price commander 1911. Any thoughts? Been considering the Ruger but have my eye on the Para. I open to suggestions.

If I did not already have a Commander that I am pretty happy with, I would look pretty closely at the Ruger, it seems like a great value.

I have an American Classic and a Para Expert Commander (aluminum frame).

The AC is a very good shooter and smooth but fit of the factory grip safety wasn't the best. I bobtailed it and fit a .220 radius grip safety at the same time. Out of my four 1911's (others are both Springfield) it had the smoothest slide/frame combo (out of the box).

The Para is my preferred carry gun. Fit and finish are very good and I don't notice the firing pin block at all. It comes with a plastic mainspring housing, but I'm about to bobtail this one too so that'll be gone soon.

If weight isn't a problem and you want a shooter, I think the American Classic is a decent choice.

My first choice would be a Colt Commander. As a less expensive option I would probably go with the Ruger version.

I'd go with the Remington R1 Commander over the a Ruger. In a heartbeat. You can't compare racking the slide on them.

Mid to Low price...to me that screams ATI or Rock Island...sub $600 category.

Reliable, awesome CS if needed, and you can still pimp 'em later if you wish

ditto Big Shrek... ATI and RI both in that $400 range. Both excellent pistolas...
Owned two ATIs (Gov't and Comm) and both were flawless shoots and a great value for the $$s!!
If you want to move up in $$s, get the 'real thing' a Colt Commander for about $800+... my Colts have been flawless, dead-accurate shoots.
But you have alot to choose from in the $600-800 range. Good Luck!

I picked up a Ruger commander (SR1911) recently and it's now my favorite gun. It costs more than the ATI or RIA, but it's stainless and American made.

Not sure what mid to low priced means to anyone other than me, but I have a WC Colt Commander and an ATI Commander, and I'd recommend either depending on budget.

Thanks for all of the great tips guys. I am leaning towards the Ruger. I am going to see if I can go shoot one and see how I like it.
