Let's premise this by saying that I normally buy powder from local suppliers. That being said, I made my first powder order from Midway and am a bit miffed at the moment and may even cancel the order.

Midway showed WST to be "in stock". In Stock was written all over the invoice, etc., etc. I placed an order and my credit card was charged. Fast forward a few days and I check my account info at Midway to find out that the order was "processed". The meaning of processed on their site apparently means the product was out of stock and will be shipped when available.

So, I called customer service and was told this was normal. They don't keep powder in stock and it is drop-shipped from the manufacturer. I was further told that with the overwhelming amount of orders, that rather than 3 weeks (normal), it could take 16 weeks to get my order. Meanwhile, I have already paid for it.

Am I over-reacting? Should I just be happy that I will have powder in 4 months? What say ye?

Unless the web page explained that delay, I do agree that a third of a year is pushing the limits of the term "in stock." :)

Note: I've been buying stuff from other online suppliers, and there's a long delay, but they say so up front--and it's more like 1-2 months.

They get all their primers and powder drop shipped from Powder Valley. PV is weeks behind.
I got a Powder Valley order for what was in stock powder Feb 24th, I haven't heard a word since the initial email.

Wrong of Midway not to be up front about the delay(The whole industry in under huge delays, however.).
You could request a cancellation and your card credited back. No reason they wouldn't do that if you wish.

Midway has a notice posted on EVERY powder on their website.

Has for a while - I ordered some 4064 a few weeks ago, listed as in stock, but the product page specifically said

"Attention!
Due to extremely high demand for smokeless powder, shipping times have been extended. PLEASE NOTE: Powder ships separately approximately 16 weeks after order is placed. $27.50 Haz Mat plus $9.99 Shipping fees apply. Powder cannot be returned, 48 lb max, ground freight only, adult signature required. Sorry no shipments to HI or AK."

Check it out yourself...

For all of the good that MidwayUSA does, this is a matter that irks me as well. Back in the day, when I had my FFL, I used them almost exclusively. Orders were timely, and always correct. That they listed "my" powder as "in-stock", and that it would ship in approximately 6 weeks, is fine. However, I then expect that they will keep to the advertised deal.

When I called MidwayUSA a few weeks ago, to express my concern about this, and a matter of a horrid condition AR magazine, the customer service person was dismissive at best. To say that I have done "thousands" of dollars of business with Midway is almost an understatement. That I suggested perhaps I need to take all of my business elsewhere resulted in a calm and dismissive,

You can do that if you like. Would you like me to cancel your powder order?

Given that I do between $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 of business per year with MidwayUSA, and I am NOT an FFL, you would think she would have a little more elevated level of concern at losing such a loyal (nearly 28 years) customer. For what it's worth, I am finding much better deals at Midsouth (Link: http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com ). Too, their website can tell you precisely how many boxes of X are in stock. If you exceed their supplies-on-hand, it will change to an alert of "BACKORDER".

I have had too much of MidwayUSA sending me incorrectly advertised products, defective products, sending a "2nd Day Shipping" order 3 to 5 days AFTER it was placed, and then dismissing me when I called very professionally expressing my disapproval. Oh yeah, and I forgot about the latest round of powder order, 16 pounds of X powder. Ten (10) days after the order was placed and paid-for, MidwayUSA sent me an email canceling the order because if was now not in stock. Now, this was ten (10) days after it was ordered, as in-stock, paid-for as in-stock. :uhoh:

Just my two cents,

Geno

Things are still "stupid", to say the least, at this time. I've ordered a few things recently from various suppliers and ALL have told me UP FRONT if they had the item in stock or whether they were making it, ordering it, or it was backordered. I've found with Midway one has to be a little more demanding for information so i can see where the OP might feel miffed for not being told the powder wasn't in stock. Maybe its just my luck, but i've found their reps unknowledgeable about alot of the items they sell, albeit they sell just about everything; and you pay $$$$ for that inventory. I use them only if i can't get what i want anywhere else.

Part of the point is that I have already paid for it. Apparently, I should have read more of the notices. I understand that things are crazy. I have no problem with that. I am unaccustomed to being charged now and receiving product four months from now. Why not bill me in four months?

BTW, I am less miffed now. What the Big Print giveth, the small print taketh away.

I don't like places that do business like this either, Spike's Tactical comes to mind. Pay in full 1st then wait and wait. Although I do keep buying from them. Spike's will ship in stages with only 1 shipping charge.

Doesn't Midway charge for every shipment?

Don't give up yet. I agree that your credit card should not be charged until the product ships. Some states have laws about that. I would suggest contacting Larry Potterfield with your concern. His contact information is on the contact page. Let us know what you learn.

Ain't just you. I don't like paying for something to be delivered 4 months from now either. I've been known to cancel orders for this behavior (I ordered 1k cast bullets, expressly 'cause I found no back order notices, or out of stock posts/info., I checked the whole site. After order was processed, I got an email stating "due to the present situation...". Cancelled order immediately...

I ordered 16 lbs of IMR 4064 from them around 12/23ish I did not get my powder until Feb 24th. Of course they charged my card the day the order was placed. They sent me a shipping notice and tracking number after 3 weeks or so, but than it did not move anywhere. I called and got the run around that it ships from distributor and so they could not say when it would actually ship. They kept telling me it is packaged and ready to ship, than 4 weeks later it actually shipped. Very disappointed in their service, or lack thereof, I will be remembering this when I go to make future purchases.

I completely understand that the craziness has all suppliers "backed up". I have no problem with that at all. I just got off the phone with them and was basically told to get over it and that "in stock" means different things. Not to me it doesn't. Like I said, this is my first powder order from them.

So will someone confirm or deny that under "normal" circumstances that Midway charges your credit card for powder then you receive it a month or two later for in stock powders.

How about other suppliers? Is this common or am I caught in a tough spot?

Joe

I hate when companies charge yyou before the order ships.

I ordered a Forster FL sizing die last Saturday. Immediately I was charged. Come Monday, I get an email saying they are not in stock but are in production. They have no date to give me of when they'd be available.

I told them to cancel my order.

Too many bad practices, add an out of stick label to the site, don't charge until the item ships.

You're not here to hold on to my money for me.

The item was "in stock". I have been told now twice that this is normal practice for Midway and that the time is just longer. In stock for powder to Midway always means drop shipped from their supplier. Normally, it is only 3 - 4 weeks, but they always charge the credit card the day of the order. I don't think I have any alternatives at the moment.

Just venting

They get powder dropped shipped from powdervalleyinc.com. PV is backed up about 4-6 weeks. Even if Midway has it listed in stock, and it really is "in stock", it's going to be at least 4 weeks until it ships, but probably more like 6 weeks. PV won't accept backorders right now but if you find something listed in stock there, they won't charge you for 3-4 weeks.

I ordered a jug of WST on Jan 5, 2013. It was listed as in stock at time of order and my card was charged 3 days later. I received that order TODAY. During the whole time I kept checking the status of my processed order that had been subsequently changed to "best way."

That was a long two months, after being charged, to wait for a product I thought might never make it. And while the wait was far from pleasant, today is a happy day for me. On the plus side - I discovered another substitute powder in the interim.

My powder shipped from Western Powder in Miles City, MT

Bleh, that's lame. I ordered a pile of powder from Brownell's a few weeks back. A few lbs shipped, and I was billed for those. A few days later, a few more shipped and I was billed for those. A few days after that the rest shipped and I was billed for that. THAT is how it should be. Note, I didn't have to wait more than 2 weeks for ALL of it to to be delivered.
