Anyone catch Midway's Gun Stories last night?

M1 Garand was featured.

What did you think?

Overall, by far, the best show on the Garand, I've ever seen broadcast.

Here are some things I noticed/liked/disagreed with:

  • I loved the ulta slow motion shots, throughout the show, really beautiful, as usual. One of the best things about these shows. They slowed it WAY
  • down to show the clip ejection, fantastic.
  • They goofed up the pronunciation of John Garand's name. They should have known better.
  • I found it interesting when the guy shooting it, offhand, in one scene, was doing so with shoulders pretty much squared toward the target, tremendous recoil control, which is very obvious in both slow motion and the rapid fire sequences.
  • Couple times they showed M1 Carbines, instead of Garands.
  • Great scene with WWII veteran, Mr. Gonzalez, who said, "Other than my two brothers, the Garand was my best friend."
  • They totally blasted the "ping" myth. "Pure bunk" ... so much shooting going on, so many things flying around, you are not going to hear a "ping" when you have fifty soldiers shooting! The idea is nto to run out of the ammo at the same time.
  • Nice shout out for the CMP. Encouragement to buy one, sooner than later. Some misinformation about who can buy one, unfortunately. But still a great shout out.
  • Great quote: "If you are a true American patriot and love guns, you must own a Garand."

Best quote, from editor of American Rifleman

"The thing about the American Rifleman, armed with the US Rifle Cal .30, M1, is eight rounds at a time, he did nothing less, than save the world."

I've never watched a gun show that brought tears to my eyes, this one did. Perfect choice for broadcast during the week of July 4.

Not a bad show. They over hyped it IMHO. Did not go into that pains and modifications it took to get it right, presented it as if the final version was the same as the first. Still the best gun series on TV right now.

They goofed up the pronunciation of John Garand's name. They should have known better.

That was discussed, and a explanation was presented. It might not have been what you think is correct, but there is no recording of how the man pronounced his own name, so it's up for interpretation.

You are wrong.

It is not "up for interpretation"

The one man who worked with him longer than perhaps anyone, Hatcher, explains how his name was pronounced in his Book of the Garand.

So, unless you have some better and more authoritative information than that....

:uhoh:

Come on PTMCCAIN how am I wrong??

Was it discussed on the show? Yes,
Was an explanation given for their choice? Yes
Is there a recording of him pronouncing his name, they say no. So I am correct there also.
Are educated people disagreeing (outside this forum) on how it's pronounced? Yes, they did so on the show you are in love with.

I did not say which pronunciation I believe is correct, I just stated the facts.

So check your ego, you may not like it but I am not the one who is wrong here.

When a man of the stature of Maj. Gen. Julian Hatcher, who knew John Garand on a professional AND a personal level, states how he knew the pronunciation of his name to be, I think any room for "interpretation" is over.
So check your ego, you may not like it but I am not the one who is wrong here.
If you say so.:D

I had the honor of serving under an Army NCO named Garand, and he pronounced his own name Gah-RAND. Which was no surprise to me.

not sure if it is available on line but here is the schedule of when it airs on the Outdoor channel
NEXT EPISODE

M1 GARAND
Hosted by actor and gun enthusiast Joe Mantegna, Gun Stories takes viewers through a firearm’s history, from the heart of the design through its use on the range, all while using state-of-the-art, high-speed photography. This week, the M1 Garand.

07-03 AT 7:00AM | 07-04 AT 2:30PM | 07-04 AT 8:00PM | 07-04 AT 11:00PM | 07-05 AT 1:30AM | 07-06 AT 3:00AM

They've made some nice improvements to the show since the first season; namely, Joe gets to shoot the guns he is talking about. So far, the shooting sequences have been at Gunsight. First the SW 29, then the M1.

"Gun Stories," is, in my opinion, the best show of its kind.

I thought TAC TV might be good, but...well...as much as I like LAV, the show is about LAV more than the weapon platforms.

What makes Gun Stories so good is that they stick to one gun, and only one gun, have a panel of interesting experts and commentators, and just indulge in beautiful, ultra high speed slow motion with each weapon.

The hour is over before I know it.

My only complain is that DirecTV does not provide the channel that Gun Stories is on in HD!! Dang it.

" Come on PTMCCAIN how am I wrong??"

I've already told you, how, and why, you are wrong. Have you read Hatcher's Book of the Garand? If not, I highly recommend it. It is absolutely fascinating.

It is very clear that Garand pronounced name the way we pronounce errand, just stick a G on the front. People who are truly knowledgeable about Mr. Garand know this as simple fact. Just read Hatcher's books and articles. For you to stick to your point, you are going to have to convince all of us that Gen. Hatcher, who was intimiately familiar with Mr. Garand simply was: (1) Lying; (2) Stupid; (3) An incompetent.

He reports in the book precisely how John Garand pronounced his own last name.

I'm not trying to "out ego" you, but you are simply saying something that is factually wrong.

OK, there you go, another "ear witness" ... thank you sir.

You confirm precisely what General Hatcher reports in his book.

Now, are we going to have somebody tell our fellow forum member he is lying, forgetful or delusional?

I certainly hope not.

Case closed, gents!

It is properly pronounced GAIRund, or as he also said " like the word ' parent.'

I have also heard reports that he himself called the US Rifle, Cal .30, M1, the "GUH-rand", as is the popular pronunciation (and different from his last name).

"I have heard reports"

OK. Interesting...

From whom?
Where?
When?
Do you have any proof?
Documentation?
Evidence?

Just wondering.

Oddly enough we agonized over that pronunciation! Our experts were pretty much evenly split. Joe, co-producer Tim Cremin and I finally decided to use the same pronunciation as George Patton. Was my call in the end, and I still think I was right.

Was great fun shooting all the guns with Joe! We do a lot of The filming at GUNSITE because 1) we like GUNSITE a lot and 2) the specialty cameras EAT light, and the high desert pretty much guarantees us sunlight all the time. We use 3-4 4-foot square mirrors to pour light onto the subject for the ultra high speed stuff.

Next week's Thompson episode is EPIC! I think we're going to put it in for an Emmy just to creep Hollywood out!

@MBaneACP any thoughts on doing a show on the Browning Hi-Power? I've seen some really good shows from this series and would really enjoy seeing how you do with that particular firearm. I feel it epitomizes the refinement of Brownings elegant firearm designs.
Another thought would be the PPK but I realize it is not a particularly American Firearm

PTMCCAIN:
Checking your personal info has a link to a nice AK-47 breakdown video, done in bright light.

My problem is finding a well-illuminated video for the M-1, which clearly shows not just disassembly, but reassembly.
A guy showed me where to lube friction points a year ago, but I've forgotten not just which areas to lube, but also how he reassembles the parts of the action.

Michael, love the show, even if you did, without question, get the name wrong. You'll see in this thread reference to General Hatcher's book and what is more, rather remarkably, a man who directly heard from Mr. Garand himself on how to pronounce it.

You did a nice job demolishing the myth of the ping. When it was first mentioned, I thought, "Oh, boy, here it comes...." and then your guys did a great job demolishing that one.

GREAT SHOW.

These Gun Stories are awesome.

Any plan to release them on BluRay?

DirecTV does not broadcast the Outdoor Channel in HD.

Thanks, glad you liked it and found it helpful.

I believe I read that factoid in a GCA Journal, but I don't have a citation for it by any stretch of the imagination. Just something that stuck in my memory because I thought it was interesting.

BHP on short list for next season...probably use my Novak .40 as the "gun porn model!"

Great show that even though its only half as long is every bit the equal of "the tales of the gun".

I like how only one model is focused on. If I have a nitpick it would be to delve a bit more into the mechanical aspects of the gun a bit more...but hey I'm a gun nerd.

I think some lowly but widely recognized guns deserve a show. Marlin60, ruger10/22, Marlin lever actions ect. IMO a gun doesn't have to save the free world or serve on the side of evil to be a great gun.
