About a week and a half ago I posted a thread about Midway and their lack of Postal Service shipping options in the last year. I had sent them emails earlier in the fall, and I sent them one just after Christmas, and received no reply. I also had a couple of my friends send emails, and one of them got a response. He forwarded it to me. Here is the text:

"Thanks for your contact with Larry. I’m sorry it’s
taken a while to respond—Larry’s customer contact rate
via email, voice mail and letter consistently runs well more
than 2000 per week. He reads/listens to all his contacts but
obviously can’t respond to them personally. Between
this and his other obligations as CEO, it takes him a while
to respond to customer inquiries. He asked me
to follow up with you.

For years our customers complained that our shipping rates
are too high compared to our
competition. The reason for that is that we
used to roll the cost of shipping into the price of the
products. This meant customers in the Midwest were
subsidizing the shipping cost of customers on the
coasts. The policy we started in May of 2001 charges
our customers their actual cost of shipping (plus a small
charge for packing/insurance/etc.). We do not pad our
product profits to offset "free" or artificially low
shipping costs. The charges you pay are not used to
offset the orders of other customers nor are their orders
used to subsidize yours. You will notice that this
philosophy means our shipping charges are based on the cost
of shipping the order, not on the VALUE of the order.

As a result of that overall shipping philosophy, customers
were confused when comparing our shipping costs to our
competitors, who were able to appear to have lower shipping
prices because they could subsidize those shipping charges
with other product lines and revenue streams. That’s why
we recently adopted the new UPS shipping programs Sure Post
and Mail Innovations. They’re designed to give the lowest
possible shipping prices at the expense of speed, which is
precisely what a large portion of our customers have been
requesting for many years. Those orders are picked up by UPS
but delivered by the Post Office. The Post Office will
deliver the package based on the most effective use of their
delivery schedule and capability. That sometimes
results in short delays of a day or
two. It's a function of being the least
expensive shipping method available. Based on past
experience, we expect our customers to request between a
third to a half of our orders to be shipped via those two
methods of shipping by the end of this year. We realize
those two shipping programs won’t be optimal for some
customers so we retained UPS Ground as an alternative. If
you’d prefer your packages be kept by UPS for final
delivery please remember to select UPS GROUND as your method
of shipping on future orders.

We are gradually working toward a new shipping program which
we hope to implement this spring. The new program is
intended to offer the best value of cost and speed in
processing for the majority of our customers and the orders
they place. My understanding is that our new shipping
program will not be a "select your method of shipping"
program as we've done for many years. Customers will have
the option of choosing "Standard Shipping" OR an expedited
method of shipping e.g. UPS Second Day. Packages MAY ship
via Priority Mail or Flat Rate Mail as part of "Standard
Shipping" when the order is packaged and prepared for
labeling. However, there will be no alternatives within
"Standard Shipping" offered at the time the order is
placed. I appreciate your understanding and apologize
for any inconvenience. "

This was sent by Brian from their Customer Service Department.

Anyway, I'm pleased to see that they may be changing things this spring, and it renews my faith in their Customer Service. I guess they must be swamped if they are getting that many emails, so it's no wonder that some of ours have gotten lost in the shuffle. It seems that by sheer volume we've finally gotten our questions answered. This may dispel rumors and speculation about an exclusive contract with UPS.

I set up an order from Midway one time. when I said I planed to send a check with my written order they told me there was an extra charge for personal check. Then I was told the shipping was increased because of that "personal check sur-charge" So, I asked why my check made my products heavier. Then I said I'd decided to look for these things here closer to home. I've never ordered anything from Midway.

I don't dislike them, I just buy local and we're all happy.

Mark

I've gotten consistently excellent service from Midway.

As for paying with a personal check, I don't understand why you'd do that in this day and age.

After all, it's the 21st century. We may not have flying cars, but at least we can pay for things instantly and electronically, and get two day shipping! :D

Other than their website needing a rethink, my only real complaint with MidwayUSA is that their shipping charges seem high, especially considering I'm only one state over. Shipping is always $15 and change even if I'm ordering a small part.

Priority Mail would be a welcome option, that should cut the price in half for stuff that fits in a standard PM box or envelope.

Everyone complains about their shipping costs...but I find them to be competitive with Brownells and Powder Valley.

Brownells is about 100 miles further from me than Midway.

Last two orders I got from those two about within $5 in price range and less than a pound difference in weight, and both arrived in about 5 days.

Brownells charged $14.95 shipping
Midway charged $9.95 shipping

Powder Valley is about 340 miles further from me than Midway

I got 1000 Hornady 55gr FMJ bullets plus 4 other items from Midway
$12.50 shipping

I got 1000 Hornady 55gr FMJ bullets from Powder Valley
$14.95 shipping

plus the bullets were $10 cheaper from Midway

Depending on what I am ordering I open orders in Midway, Brownell's, Amazon, (prime,) Cabela's, etc. I set up identical orders with each of them, go to the screen where the order is finalized, and see which one has the most in stock with the lowest total cost. It's almost always Midway.

Another freight cost scenerio:

3000 plated .400" bullets shipped to MI.

Midway charges $35.30 for USPS Flat rate shipping. Which is two of the $12 medium boxes.

Xtremebullets.com charges nothing at all to ship using those same $12 flat rate boxes.

I'm not the kind of guy that expects free shipping all the time. But I also don't expect to overpay for freight by 30%. I like Midway and shop there often, but their freight prices really aren't that competitive and consequently I find myself spreading out my shopping a little more these days. Their loss.

I find their explanation to be confusing. I find their product prices to most often to be competitive, but their S&H is always higher. Graf's and Sons is only about 30 miles away from them so shipping to me (1600+ miles away) should be the same, correct? Yet an order I made with Graf's at regular prices was significantly less expensive than the same product selection of which 2 items were on sale from Midway.

To my way of thinking "handling" costs (passed on to the consumer by being built in to the cost of the product) should be the same no matter where the pkg is being sent and the "shipping" should be what the actual cost is.

It wasn't the last time I ordered from them, but back during the panic I put a couple PMags on backorder. Figured I'd get another AR at some point, the price wasn't inflated, I got to make a hectic situation worse... so why not?

So one day this package shows up with two PMags in it and the shipping was something like $15. I found that ridiculous - I could ship 500 bullets to Anchorage in a priority mail box for less than that.
I complained to them about the shipping too.
Now when I order from Midway, I just save it up and order a bunch of stuff at once. If I have to pay their shipping I make sure it's worth it.
But to be fair, I try to do that with anyone I order from and Midway has always been great to me. They are my first choice when I shooting stuff online.

When making purchases I fill the cart of 3 or 4 suppliers I deal with to check final cost ,including shipping for the exact same order.Midway almost always doesnt get my order.Prices including shipping are 99% of the time higher......Don

Same here, and the place to compare shipping rates is online when working up an order. Fussing about comparisons here does nothing.

Sometimes Midways shipping is high. When it is, I either suck it up and pay it, or order elsewhere (Usually the latter). Most of the time it is reasonable though.

I always look at the total cost of the order including shipping. Frequently, one vendor will have lower product costs but higher shipping costs and another, the product costs are a bit higher but the shipping costs are lower.

I have deleted orders from Midway because I felt their shipping costs were ridiculous for what i was buying. Then shopped somewhere else.

But, another problem, is not everyone has what I am looking to buy. If I have to go to several vendors, the shipping costs add up. Frequently, I get one stop shopping with Midway and i save on shipping in the long run.

Another issue i do not like with Midway is they charge separate shipping charges for back ordered items. So, I virtually never place anything on back order with Midway.

Yes, I have gotten good service from Midway over the years.

Around New Years Day I placed an order with Midway for a couple AR mags and some small parts---I got the lowest rate and it arrived in couple days--which I consider good because of the holiday.

BUT--playing around before I ordered---if I added a third mag to the order added $3 to the shipping charge--which would take up no more room and little weight in the oversized shipping bag---which I thought was crazy--they have to be charging by dollar amount rather than actual shipping cost.

At least they tell you what shipping will be before you order.

If you order from Powder Valley, you won't know the shipping charge until your card is charged. No comparison shopping there.

Midway added USPS shipping as an option. I just ordered some parts and the shipping was $5.50 instead $15+ via UPS. This makes me very happy.

I don't get to worked up about shipping charges as long as the company gives you the ability to see the charges before you order. $15 is 4 gallons of gas. I burn that going to Walmart and back. Tends to make a loaf of bread and gallon of milk seem high.

I buy quite a bit from Midway because they usually have what I want in stock. Except powder, but that's for another time. The shipping plus order total are sometimes a but higher from Midway, but they're so close it doesn't make sense to make a fuss over it, so I go ahead and order from them. After all if I can afford to spend $1K for a firearm I can afford $2 more for shipping on an order.

Maybe Midway should look at Amazon.com and consider having a program like Amazon Prime where for an annual fee you get free shipping or at least a set shipping cost of just a couple of bucks, maybe a discount on freight?

I'm a big fan of Amazon Prime and I found myself buying certain gun-related things from them instead of from Midway due to the difference in shipping (~$15 UPS Ground vs. "Free" 2-day). With the $5 shipping option, Midway will definitely see more of my small item / impulse purchase business.

All things being equal, I'd prefer to buy gun-related stuff from MidwayUSA because they support the industry and seem to run their business the right way.

Whoops, MidwayUSA is using "UPS Mail Innovations" for these low cost shipments. It appears to be the same thing as FedEx Smartpost where the package is handed off to the USPS at some point for delivery.

Slow and circuitous, but cheap.

I have a package from Midway waiting at Jacksonville FL for delivery to Orlando. It got there Friday afternoon. It will sit until Monday morning because UPS doesn't work on weekends.

I just purchased some Bianchi speed strips a few hours ago and noted they had USPS shipping of some sort for a very reasonable cost. I'm glad they now have this lower cost option, I will probably be using Midway USA more often.

I ordered a muzzle brake from a company that is less than 200 miles door to door from my house. The company that makes these brakes only has one shipping option, USPS box rate, which is a priority shipping service, free to the recipient. This brake traveled over 1800 miles to get to my PO Box and took over 7 days to get here. The postal service is a bad joke. I regularly order for my business from a company in CF. that is over 1000 miles away. They have only one option also, Fed-Ex Overnight, and the merchandise always gets here the next day unless it is Sunday. Their rates are figured in the mdse. and is usually less than I can buy locally, so go figure.
