Was watching a show on the history channel and seen a couple of our guys with shotguns. Does anyone know what type of shotguns our military use now days? thanks

be safe

Primary shotgun used by the military is the Mossberg 500 in to 4 versions. Around 30-35,000 are currently in use with new contracts going out fairly often:

Mossberg 500A1 NSN 1005-01-371-4462 (USMC/Navy) 17" barrel

Mossberg 500A2 NSN 1005-01-371-5939 20" barrel

Mossberg 500 NSN 1005-01-085-1032 or (Army) 18 " barrel

Mossberg 500 MLS NSN 1005-01-295-1832 18 " barrel

The 500 and the 500A1 are the most common I believe. The 500A1 is most commonly known in the civilian sector as the 590. The 20" 590 with the heat shield and baynet lug was procured in rather small numbers also. Since these have been in procurement since the 70's with very little attention to the procurements you will find variations to include some 14" models. The Afghan Army and Police have also recieved 14" 590's.

The USMC also uses the Benelli M-4 type classified as the M-1014. Total of around 10,000 after the current contract is delivered.

The Air Force is using mostly Remington 870's I believe. The Air Force Security Police also use some of the 870 MCS SOF uses some cut down 10" 870's for breaching and also has some of the Remington 870 MCS's. Total MCS's that have been procured is arounf 3,000 after the current contract is delivered. You will also find some 870's in various units that have simply not been turned in.

The Winchester 1200 was in service, but TACOM directed that they be turned for replacement with Mossberg a few years ago. The message included the 870's, but did not list them by name.

The XM-26 will never go to procurement in my opnion. We used the early model in Afghanistan.

When I was in the Marines in the late 80s and early 90s, we had 2 870s, 4 or 5 M-1200s and the rest were Mossberg M590s that were then new. The 870s had the 14" barrels and folding stock we used to guard the CINCSouth over in Italy. The 1200s were old back then and more than likely have long been replaced by now.
Today in the Air Force, we had old full stock Remington 870s either with the 4-round magazine or the 7-round magazine with the bayonet lug style magazine tube support. They have been getting phased out though by the Remington 870MCS. That's what I've been exposed to first hand although reports of Mossberg M-590s with 18.5" barrels and the Marines use of the Benelli M-4 are also signs that there are several varieties in service throughout the DOD.

Military Shotguns

Today, I wish I could find what I found in the late 1950's. I was on a trip (Air Force C-124 Crewchief) out of Kelly AFB, Texas into England and Europe. I forget just which base we were at but believe it was Burtonwood in England. Saw, and could have bought "NEW" Winchester Model 12's 12 Gauge Riot Guns, for $28 each. Still in cosmoline (spelling??). Of course they all had the short barrels so was not really interested Then. They literally had them in stacks.

I was in Washington D.C. in 2007 touring the capital. All of the security police surrounding the capital building were using Benelli's at that time. I made a point to speak with one of them and ask. We had a nice discussion. His was loaded with buckshot and had a couple of slugs on a side saddle if he needed them or so he told me. He could not let me hold it or get close enough to inspect it. It also had a sling if I remember correctly.

Edit...! just happen to have a picture of the capital security with his shotgun. The picture was taken in Apr 2007. Look closely and you can see the slug tips on his side saddle.

that's a nice looking benelli. My father had a M3 Super 90. Seems like that would be a bit better for capitol security. Semi automatic to dish out the nasty stuff, pump to dish out the 'less than lethal' stuff.

thanks guys I was just wondering DMR you seem to know a lot about them so it seems they are still useing pumbs with the exception of the benelli? If I read the replys right.

I do quite a bit of work on military shotgun projects, so I keep a close eye on all of the various contracting issues surronding them.
