No, the story related isn't true.

Audie's extreme bravery is much more believable than the story of the former Ranger Captain turned Sergeant Major who carried the sawed-off double barrel shotgun in the shoulder holster, but only used it on a cobra, who escorted SEALs though in the NG, and who tried to trade for the SEAL sniper's rare, highly valuable issued weapon that had been out of inventory at that point for 20 years, and which would have been totally unsuited for its claimed role, in any case.

I did see a Soviet submachine gun while with 3rd Group, but it was made in the millions, and would have been dirt cheap, and easily found in captured arms caches, unlike the highly collectable M1 Sniper rifles...
