I normally don't go to Cabela's for anything. But every once in awhile I like to walk in and see what is new and way over priced. I just had to share. Empty, empty shelves for all handgun ammo. Its only gonna get worse. I am glad I reload and am well heeled for the drought that is upon this country. Millions of guns will be empty or short on ammo I am sure. And then will come the price gougers.
By the way. Zero reloading powder and slim on the primers. I have been stocked up for years just for this very reason. I was in a really good spot when Sandyhook happened. But once the Donald was elected and things opened back up. I really loaded the cupboards to extra capacity. So I am ready to weather this

Looks like my Cabela's. I scored a few 50 rd box of 22LR yesterday-all they had, ad I noticed they were pulling 50 rd boxes of Rem 9mm FMJ from a locked cabinet to sell to anyone buying a handgun. No other handgun ammo of any caliber at all.

They had absolutely tons, and tons, and TONS of every kind of 20 and 410 gauge ammo you can think of, and a few tons of 12 gauge #8 as well. Who the heck ordered all that?

In the early 90's I went to a couple of gun stores to buy primers and they had none. Go to a third and they would sell me a whopping 100 primers so I asked "why" and they told me. Once you experience that it sticks with you.
The exact same thing happened to me. It won't happen again.

I am currently finishing the last brick (of 1000) Large Rifle primers from that era. The purchase date I wrote on the brick is 15 March 1994.

When that brick is finished, I'll move to primers purchased in the later 90s.

And, when things loosen up in the future, whenever that is, I'll purchase more primers.

In case lots.

You are more than welcome to start another thread and it will stay open as long as members' posts are within THR forum rules - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?pages/code-of-conduct/

I think we should use these "stocking up" threads to remind other members that shortages are due to simple supply and demand situation and is cyclical and will happen over and over again over span of years and decades.

So there is no need for panic rather careful planning to set aside money, perhaps each month or use the tax refund, to build up a "shooting/reloading fund" to utilize to stock up when prices are lower or when good sales are on, particularly around Black Friday when everybody has likely the best sales of the year.

But complaining and drifting off topic not in line with THR forum rules and the thread will get locked ... And I am under the impression that most moderators have jobs and have family obligations and hardly "bored" to moderate THR threads.

BTW, isn't it their "job" to lock threads that do not follow THR ideals? ;)

I kinda wish there was a "sighting" thread. Just people posting what there local ammo situation is like and when they see ammo available and where it's at

Friend of mine said he was considering selling his Glock 27. I told him, I'd buy it and made him an offer, that he agreed to.
I knew I had a box of 40sw floating around. Found it - 10rds left in there.

Today, I stopped by a LGS and grabbed 2 more boxes of 40sw. Need to re-remind myself why I dislike the 40sw.
Figure I'll shoot this ammo up and then drop a 9mm barrel into the gun and be done with it. Have lots of 9mm.

I haven't been in a gun shop since this chinese flu started. I should go in to walk down memory lane of '13-'14.
I would like to get certain bullets, but I'mnot holding my breath.

Hate these threads. People reply to these types of threads with thier nose held up so high, they'd drown in a rain storm. Like "should have learned from the last shortage, I'm fully stocked up". Ok. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm stocked up as well but there are new gun owners more than ever. Some of these people really don't know why they cant find ammo. Sad.

I hate politics and THR does too, but the reality is, hope for 4 more years of Trump.

Having plenty of ammo is great to “weather the storm”. I have plenty. That being said I like to take new people to the range who have never shot before. Which I will. I still won’t shoot as much as I like not knowing i can’t replenish. Yes I reload,at least did. It is frustrating for the regular shooters who don’t own their own “cow” and looking for milk. Now is the time for encouraging newbies on the 2nd amendment and having a good time safety shooting.

good post

I think patience and awareness are key right now in find ammo or reloading supplies right now.

Diligence in checking always helped me obtain ammo. Specifically 22 when it was scarce. I would guess most of us have a smart phone. Bookmark all the big box stores, keep them open in a web tab, constantly refresh and keep looking.

And don't be afraid to put things on back order. Ammo, bullets, primers, anything. Yeah, we may pay a premium, but i stated before, the few extra bucks are worth it IMO to have what we want.

To these new owners, it's already been explained why they can't find ammo ... demand exceeded supply and ammunition manufacturers' production rate to resupply retailers. Same situation as new home owners complaining they can't find "affordable" housing in major coastal cities. It's sad reality of life. Of course, best time was to buy when prices were lower. Now's not that time. Perhaps after November, prices of ammunition will fall and become more available.

You are likely stocked up because you learned from the past shortages.

To those who have experienced past shortages but did not stock up when the prices were low and inventory high in recent years, "should have learned from the last shortage ..." message applies. Hopefully lesson will be learned and ammunition/components will be stocked up for the next shortage.

I have spent my 20s to 40s telling friends, coworkers, family and neighbors to contribute to their 401K/Roth IRA to supplement their retirement pension/Social Security and to purchase at least one house. If they failed to prepare for their retirement and complain to me that they don't have enough money to afford decent housing and lifestyle, what am I supposed to tell them? Lower housing standards and lifestyle? As to gun owners, they have the option to not shoot (whether by choice or not) but complaining about not being able to find ammunition does nothing productive. (Saving money and establishing a shooting/reloading budget is productive action they can take now)

When price of 22LR ammunition fell below $30/500, I started this support thread for THR members to stock up - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...ammo-for-sale-under-30-for-500-rounds.825048/

When price of 22LR ammunition fell below $15-$20/500 shipped, I started this support thread so THR members could really stock up with "Happy days are here again" - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/22lr-for-less-than-15-20-500-shipped.853059/

These threads ran for a long time to allow even those members with tight monthly budget to accumulate sizable stockpile to last the shortage. If they chose not to stock up when they obviously had plenty of time to do so, there's not much to say. I have a friend who runs through money like sands through his hands even though he makes $11,000 a month ... Yeah, seriously. I urged him to stock up when 22LR was around $16/500 shipped and did he do it? Of course not. So when the current shortage started, he called to ask if he could get some 22LR from me to go shooting with his grandchildren. I told him, "Of course. I knew you wouldn't stock up so I bought extra 20,000 rounds just for you. You can pick up anytime."

Agree. Vote for those who will better support gun rights and the Second Amendment. Choice is clear.

Kinda jealous you have bricks of those CCI ARTatical .22lr. I would have brought a small stack
Sadly sooooo many seem to have memory that only last's a few weeks. o_O

This shortage too will pass. Ammo will be available. Most will go back to sleep and ignore it. A few may get smart this time and set aside a year's or so supply. In the mean time we will daily see people say they went to the store and there is no ammo acting like this is a shock.
For everyone who is shocked to see the empty shelves try to remember this when they fill up again and you see sales on the stuff.

The problem with those is by the time people read them most run there and the stuff is gone, so then they are mad. Assuming you live where you can still order ammo? The way to do it is use one of the sites that show ammo availability. If you want some you have to watch them several times a day. Stuff comes in all the time. When you see it buy. Many places will let you still back order stuff they know is on the way, and or let you sign up to be notified as it comes in. For those where mail order has been done away with you are pretty much stuck till shelves fill back up.

I really wish people would start to be honest and stop calling this a cycle. It is not a cycle. What is sad is what I have seen in a store that I have been going into for decades. I have knowm most of the staff for years and when I walked in the place was almost bare of ammo and firearms. But the worst part is that all the staff was new except for one manager. .I asked one of them what happen and he just replied. "I did not know them, but just one, and he had to find a new job the others quite before I was hired". Personally I have a feeling some stores are going to be forced to close in the near future. The Market has been destabilized and it is going to get worse.

Don't really ever think of it as a cycle myself. Seems often something can set off a panic now days with no warning. One was that scum who shot all those kids at that grade school. That set off another small panic shortage. Elections seem to. Some "mass shootings" do, so do not. All I know is I have seen these shortages induced by panic more times than I can count. So I LONG ago made sure they do not effect me. It does get a little hard to feel bad for the people who have lived through one or more, who when the next one comes don't find out about it till weeks after the stuff is gone. Then they go online to tell everyone the shelves at the store are empty. I often want to ask them do you live in a cave? In any case stuff will come back, stacks in the stores and big sales again. So many will go back to sleep till something sets off yet another. I keep telling people you do not have to rack up credit card debt or such. When the stuff is there and cheap. Keep buying more than you use. Soon you are set and next time you hear of a panic shortage you can laugh it off no matter what caused it.

As clearly evidenced by the current shortage, his administration is just as responsible for this shortage as the previous shortages were deemed caused by the previous administration. Difference is, previous shortages were brought on by fear of restrictions and bans. This shortage is caused by fear of lawlessness and civil strife.

Then there are these kinds of threads which spread the fear and make other folks believe they must rush out and buy everything they see. thus promoting and prolonging the shortage.

BTW.....none of my guns are going hungry. Many will feast tonight.
