Milsurp rifles & Recoil

I just recently purchased a 91/30, after having read all the stories and watching the videos I decided to err on the side of caution and bought a UAG 1" butt pad to replace the steel one.

At our friends redneck range (100 yard shooting lane carved out of the hardwood forest on his land) the wife and I started out small, shooting .22, 9mm, .40 pistols, then finally hauled out the Mosin.

The dogs up by the house had been barking, wanting to be out there with us... till I pulled the trigger on the first round. 148gr Hungarian surplus. I turned to the wife, she pulls off her gun muffs and says "That isn't a rifle, that's damn cannon!"

Yes, it will abuse you if you aren't careful. I have a four inch long "mosin bite" on my shoulder from one careless moment, but it will fade. Once home, I drilled the holes all the way through on the pad to soften it a bit more and will try that. Not something I want to shoot 100 rounds through at one sitting, but loads of fun and manageable. I figure if I took it deer hunting, even if I miss the deer the concussion will knock it down till I can finish it off at closer range...
