All,

Bought some Ruger factory Mini-14 mags in 5rds and 20rds. After fighting with aftermarket crap for over year, I made the plunge. They may have been costly $15 for 5rd and 50 for 20rd, but they work flawlessly and I've no regrets. I'll be purchasing two of the 20rd/mon for the next year.

Factory are best.

It seem to be true that finding a functioning aftermarket Mini 14 magazine is a matter of luck. Only the factory mags are anywhere near being a sure thing reliability wise. I just bought 2 more factory 20 rounders, for a total of 6.

Wonder why the aftermarket can't make a consistantly reliable mag?

because if they did it would probibly cost 45$ and who would buy it :p

most mags that are cheap arnt worth it. only name brands like Mec-gar should you trust. never trust promag...

Word has it that CProducts (which has a fairly good reputation for AR-15 mags) is releasing a Mini-14 magazine sometime this year.

Ive had good luck with the Pro Mags as well. At first, they were a tight fit, but after two light passes of a file on the locking tab, they fit perfectly.

I wouldnt be surprised if Ruger starts selling the 20 rounders to the public soon...that is if there is no future bans.

As far as price goes, the factory 20s seem to be in line with other factory high cap mags for other guns...especially the M14/M1A

That would rule. I have 2 30-rounders and a 40-rounder for the mini, and they work intermittently. I had to enlarge the mag pin hole in one with a file.

The factory 20-rounder I have works flawlessly, but it sure was pricey.

Ruger is just now starting to spread their wings after the unfortunate loss of Bill Ruger sr. and the company is under fresh management. Change is slow within any company.

There is an awful lot of companies out there that I am seeing diversify their line for tactical and military styled weapons. Remington and Sig immediately come to mind. There has also been a complete flood of companies offereing AR 15 clones.

I just wonder if these companies are preparing themselves at all should another weapons ban go into affect. Many will all of a sudden find a reduced market and a lot of money invested in production.

never trust promag...

Had 4 or 5 Promags, ten and 20 rounders, back when I had a Mini. One had a follower that nosedived, which the company replaced. No problems, whatsoever, with the others. They were the only aftermarket magazines that I tried that would actuate the bolt hold-open without Dremmel surgery.

Well, all I can say is that I have three different brands and the only ones I've found to work are the Ruger Factory mags. I'll be buying more.

However, I've not tried the polymer mags.

Anyone? Bueller?

PMI and Masen

Hello,
Don't know if PMI or Masen are made any longer but they've worked for me. Also I fortunately thought to buy a factory 30 rounder back in 1981 when I first got my Mini-14.

hmm. seems the promag mini 14 mags are decent. their AK and pistol mags are generaly less than ideal. good to know.

I have two factory 20s, and two John Masen 20s. I would love about 10 factory mags, but that's almost as expensive as the rifle! The JMs work, but as the pic shows, they are painted metal as opposed to blued, and a full half inch longer, too. Of course, they are also, $15 as opposed to $50, and these two work just fine. The JMs will NOT lock in under a closed bolt, and the factory will.

The John Masen magazines are longer because their followers have this big spike thing coming down off them. Not sure why -- nobody else's seem to need that.

The two Masen magazines I had wouldn't lock open the bolt either.

lee, they will lock the bolt open on last round. Got another cheapo mag, a Western in so-so shape, will try it out sometime soon. I wish Ruger would make more/cheaper mags for us peons.

I got some cheap western 30 round mags to work by replacing the springs with wolf springs, and adding a ruger factory follower.

They now function flawlessly.

All areas of ruger.com dealing with Mini-14 or magazines are not available right now. Hmm. if this is true, I will have to contact them.
jerkface, where did you see this?

It was in Gun's magazine 2008 combat buyers guide. 2 new models of mini were listed one with an M4 type collapsible stock both with a 20 round mag.
