Mini-14 receivers

I looked at one last time I was up at Kittery(gunshop) I was looking at a couple of Mini-14s. I noticed the receiver had a kind of flaky-cast look to it. Why is this?

Are the receivers aluminum? Or are they cast or something?

Invesment cast & hardened steel. Don't worry; they're plenty tough- Just try to drill into one.

Rugers are all cast recievers. IIRC, they are a very large casting firm and do work outside of guns. There casts are very high quality. Think of their revolvers and rifles that have special loads only for them.
