Mini drill press for trimming brass

Yeah, your going to be closer to $400 just for something like a 1/2” Albrecht Chuck but they are top end industrial products not the cheapest Chinese consumer grade stuff one can buy.

If you just need a Chuck on a motor shaft, there are lots of ways to do that.

This may be a little cheaper option and for sure takes up less space. This is what i intend to do when i get the tri way for 223

From the manual,

The preferred method of trimming using this tool is to orient the tool such that the
case is pressed in to the tool using a straight downward or angled downward
motion. This allows brass chips and shavings generated by the trimming process
to fall away from the insert supporting the cartridge case. If the tool is used
horizontally or angled upward, there is the possibility of chips and shavings
entering the insert supporting the cartridge case between the removal of one
case and insertion of the next. If this occurs, the next case may trim improperly
or unevenly due to the debris preventing the case from fully seating or being
supported unevenly. If this occurs, a plain cotton swab can be used to wipe the
chamber insert clean.

I tried using a Drill press and a "mini" drill press. The things are powerful and you can be hurt. The tools I had, I had to hold the case and the cutting tool was in the chuck. Sometimes the cutter would grab the case and sometimes the case was out of alignment. There is a lot of power rotating the chuck and it is only by luck I was not hurt.

I eventually went to Giraud trimmers. Very fast, very safe in comparison to a bench mounted drill press.

I use a .75 horse jet drill press because that's what I have. Standard machine saftey applies. If you do anything else in your garage, you will be very pleased how useful a drill press is. I got mine off of ammazon.

A mini lathe opens pandoras box on all kinds of cool projects. For my needs a lathe was the ultimate tool before a 3d printer came out.

My new shop toy, it's a mini lathe compared to the one at work...

In years past I used a rcbs partner press, lee trim die set up, and a cordless drill. Cheap and fast. I tried the mini drill press, was a pain and slow.

I would be concerned with the bench grinder's speed. Most bench grinders will have 3,300-3,600 RPM. Much faster than most drill presses, hand drills or motorized case trimmers How would a case trimmer work at that speed?

Does anyone use a mini drill press for their WFTs or Giraud Tri-way trimmers. I've been using a cordless drill. I only trim 1000+ 223 brass this way. Tough on my old hands after awhile. Was thinking about buying this. Any opinions? Thanks

That's the exact model I have sitting on one of my benches for trimming brass using both a WFT and a Giraud Tri-Way. It works pretty well and also comes in handy as a .... drill press for smaller projects.

Got it on sale, via Amazon.

Not sure how its any different that the way the giraud power trimmer is setup? As for rpms per girauds manual it lists 1000 rpm to 3500 rpm. Every budget bench grinder ive see is rated at 3450 range and likely doesnt quit get its claimed speed so likely closer to 3k.

They would do the trick. HF has them cheaper.

I've been thinking about a cheapo drill press for the exact same application... but as irishlad posted, it's contrary to the (TriWay's) directions.

That was my thought, too. My bench grinder would torque the Earth off it's axis, I don't know that I would want to try and hold on to a piece of brass like that...

This looks like it would be the ticket
