MISSION: Kroger hypocrites banning CCW in Ohio stores

The next thing you guys need to pass in Ohio is Alan Korwin's "Gun Free Zone Liability Act" which establishes a civil cause of action for injury sustained in a posted gun free zone that a reasonable person would consider to have been prevented by carrying a firearm for defense.

Here's the website:

http://www.gunlaws.com/GFZ/index.htm

A. Any person, organization or entity, or any agency of government that creates a gun-free zone shall be liable for damages resulting from criminal conduct that occurs against an individual in such gun-free zone, if a reasonable person would believe that possession of a firearm could have helped the individual defend against such conduct. In the event the conduct is a result of a terrorist attack as federally defined, or adversely affects a disabled person, a senior citizen or a child under 16 years of age, treble damages shall apply.

It has recently come to my attention that Kroger stores in Southern Ohio have posted signs prohibiting the legal carrying of concealed handguns in your establishments.

As a responsible gun owner, I am greatly dismayed at Kroger's decision to strip its patrons of the ability to protect themselves - concealed carry permitholders go through extensive backround checks to confirm their fitness to carry, and anyone carrying illegally, and with ill intent, will not pay attention to your signs.

As a frequent vistor to the Midwest, you may rest assured that I will do my shopping elsewhere. You may also rest assured that while this policy is in place, Kroger shares will have no place in my stock portfolio.

Well here is their reply to my email:

Dear Mr. Fuller,

Thank you for contacting The Kroger Co. regarding our recent decision to post signs asking our customers not to carry concealed weapons while in the store. While the Ohio Conceal and Carry Law gives individuals the right to carry a concealed weapon, it also gives businesses the right to specify whether or not they will allow customers to carry concealed weapons on their property.

Once again we appreciate your comments.

Sincerely,

John Langlitz

Indeed, this is very true, but one step further along that chain of rights is the right of consumers to refuse to patronize such businesses.

I would suggest that you keep an eye on your various stores' traffic metrics not only in Ohio but throughout your various regions.

Perhaps when you hear crickets chirping and smell groceries going bad in your stores, you'll reconsider denying your Ohio customers their lawfully-exercised fundamental human right to self-defense.

Hopefully it won't take the death of a CCW-holding woman at the hands of her estranged ex-husband in one of your defenseless-victim zones for you to reconsider.

-Michael Pelletier.

PS - Excluding an entire class of customer doesn't seem particularly smart considering your recent 72% drop in annual net earnings.

that's odd how businesses do that. Non of the Kroger Stores here in S.C. or the Fry's (west coast branch) in A.Z. had that restriction.
Even if it did, I doubt I'd pay too much attention to it anyway.

You should boycott them anyway, and let them know why, in solidarity with your brothers and sisters in Ohio. :)

I would love to boycott them, but don't know if I have any other options. That list of stores they own at the beginning of this thread pretty much covers every store that exists where I live.

The only one not listed is Winn-Dixie and they just announced they are closing their stores here. That leaves me with no choice but to buy from them.

I will speak to my local store manager about it. So they at least know my views.

It was easy to confirm. Just call the 800# listed above and ask them. I did and they said that was correct. They had the answer on the tip of their tounge like alot of calls have been asking about their position. I agree boycot where you live and tell them why. Patrick

I sent this missive:

Dear Mr. Langlitz,

I have made multiple inquiries to Kroger in regards to its absurd banning of CHL holders from its stores. I have received no substantial response. Could you please write me and let me know why Kroger has decided that Ohio Concealed Handgun Licensees are not welcome? Please, don't respond that it is for safety, as it is proven that places that prohibit are more likely to have a murder. Please don't respond that it is because Kroger has the right to do so, we know they have the right (just as I have the right to shop at Meijer and Wal-Mart instead...which I have been doing). Mr. Langlitz, I would also like you to know that I, my wife, my mother, my father, and my grandparents will not spend any money at Kroger until the signs prohibiting us come down. As of last count, my family has spent $387.24 at Meijer that we would have spent at Kroger...if Kroger welcomed us.
Regards,
Collin

Here is my reply to Kroger:

Thank you for your reply.

Businesses also had the "right" (Before the 1964 Civil Rights Act) to discriminate based on race. I don't see the difference between that and the Kroger policy against CCW holders 40 years later. Sir, for the past 40 or so years, gun owners in this country have been treated much like Jews in Nazi Germany, or U.S. blacks before 1964, or the Chinese working the railroads in the 1800's. I'm here to tell you: It hurts, and we're tired of it.

I would recommend that Kroger seriously reevaluate the policy against CCW holders. In conducting this reevaluation, I would recommend that you contact executives from Bank of America, VISA, Dell Computer, Lowe's, and Home Depot. This issue has hit the internet (I understand it's a hot issue at your call center right now). The grass-roots gun rights movement caused the above named companies to change their discriminatory practices against gun owners. In order to prevent further economic damage to Kroger, I would recommend you follow their lead, and rescind your policy against the lawful carrying of concealed guns in your stores. Thank you.

While no doubt well-intemtioned I am a little uncomfortable invoking the Holocaust and violent rascism in this context. While there is a relationship between these and governmental control of guns I think it may be a little over the top when addressing the private sector. While I may experience discrimination as a gun owner, it is nothing like these other instances. Of course that may be in large part because I am a gun owner.

That's why I said "much like". Forced to register with the authorities, prohibited from places of business, treated with much more suspicion than other people as a matter of course, the government campaigning against us - accusing us of being mentally ill (Al Gore). There are lots of similarities, including violence against us at the hands of the government.

Good job!!!

Just posted on ofcc.net:

Ohioans For Concealed Carry has been informed by Kroger
Customer Relations that the company is reexamining its decision
to post signs barring concealed handgun license-holders from its
Cincinnati-Dayton area stores.

One of the most offensive parts of the decision by Kroger's
Cincinnati region risk management division is that although that department
controls stores in Northern Kentucky as well as Cincinnati and Dayton, signs are
NOT being posted in the Kentucky stores! Many customers have asked why Kroger
trusts Ohio citizens less than those from Kentucky or the rest of the nation.
Why is Kroger discriminating against concealed handgun license-holders from Ohio?

Since OFCC first made the hypocritical move by Kroger management public last
Saturday, the company reports having received a large amount of of phone calls,
including calls from AZ, GA, MI, IN, KY, VA, WV, CA, FL, TN and other states.
The complaints are being forwarded to the division and the home office. Customer
Relations reports that home office is reconsidering the policy.

End of quote

Thanks for the efforts everyone. Now we need to do the same with MicroCenter.
No problem with concealed carry in TX, GA etc., banned in Ohio?
Contact www.microcenter.com

Be safe.

I had a hard time finding the "right" email address for customer service for MicroCenter, but I fired off this letter...if it bounces, I'll try another address until I find the right one.

Dear Sirs:
It has recently come to my attention that MicroCenter has banned the legal carry of concealed weapons by Ohio license holders. While I understand that your organization has the right to do so, I also have the right to shop elsewhere, and I will exercise that right.

The most distressing part of this decision is that MicroCenter seems to trust their customers in other parts of the country more than us Ohioans, as concealed carry is appearently NOT prohibited in other states in which MicroCenter conducts business (Tx, Ga, Ca, Mn, Mi, and Pa for example).

Until MicroCenter ends this discriminatory practice, you'll not see a penny of my money.

Sincerely,
Mark Berridge

I sent the email to: [email protected] and it appears not to have bounced.

Didn't get my email reply until just a few minutes ago ... this is it .. emphasis mine .....
Dear Chris:

Thank you for contacting The Kroger Co. regarding our recent decision to
post signs in some of our Ohio stores asking our customers not to carry concealed weapons while in the store.
While the Ohio Conceal and Carry Law does give individuals the right to carry a concealed weapon, it also gives businesses the right to specify whether or not they will allow customers to carry concealed weapons on their property.

We understand your stance as a shopper and respect your right to take it.
However, our obligation to our valued customers is to not only provide them with quality products and services, but also a Safe place to shop . We have noted your feedback and we value it. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Please continue to contact us any time you have a question or comment.

Sincerely,

So - they concede aspects but .... don'tcha love that statement .... ''safe place to shop''!!!!!! Yeah sure ..... like if a BG wants a safe place to create mayhem .... it'll do fine. As for trying to say that barring LEGAL carry people to make it safer .. well, why don't they simply inform all legal CCW's ...... ''you are vermin, dangerous, and not to be trusted'' ..... cos that's about what it means.

I hope tho they will rethink and ''get the message''.
