I bought some starline 9 mm brass and some factory win. Target ammo to reload using that brass .
Is it ok to mix these two headstamps ?

I shoot mixed 9MM brass with a multitude of headstamps. I have enough to sort it and shoot same headstamp, but I don't because I can't shoot the difference. I actually primed 1000 Federal 9MM brass a few years ago, but it still sits in my cabinet.

Yup, what he said. Mix 'em and shoot 'em, you'll never know the difference.

Unless you are loading high powered maximum charge stuff it isnt a big deal to mix. I used to do it all the time. Nowadays though I make the best ammo I can all the time, even if I cant tell the difference. Even very low powered stuff is sorted for consistancy.

Thanks guys, I bought some titegroup, gold dot hp 115 gr and wsp primers as well .

I have taken a doe with my 3006 load so far, that was fun.

I like advice if you have some for my 9.
I bought a Taurus pt 111 g2 , 3.2 barrel, it shoots fine with the white box ammo.
Handguns are new to me , bought it for self defense.

I like this! Isn't that what we're all doing here? Trying to make the best load we can?!

I don't bother to sort or count the number of reloads on my 9mm brass. (or trim it) If the pockets get loose, the case splits, or it has poor neck tension I toss it.
The mixed brass shoots as good as I can. (which may not be saying much:) )

As an example of 5 rounds with mixed brass.
RMR 147 RN 3.5 Bullseye OAL 1.135 S+B SP
933.00
940.00
935.00
933.00
943.00

Average 936.80
ES 10.00
SD 4.49
PF 137.71

Mixed brass and the ES and SD look pretty good on this load.
In general with charges as thrown by my Lee Pro Disk, not checking each one,
using mixed brass I would estimate an overall average using different powders at around 25 for the ES and 12 for SD.

I sort all of my handgun brass. I find different brands have different case lengths. I prime with a hand-held priming tool so it is no big deal to sort brass.

It does look good, have you tested penetration with these velocities?

How many rounds per charge weight to test and is there any thing to look for differently while testing that is different than rifle loads ?

I don't sort any handgun brass. I tried to tell the difference years ago and couldn't. Don't make reloading more difficult than it needs to be. It's enjoyment to me.

Mix all your various small pistol and rifle primers together with the mixed headstamps while you at it and see if that makes any difference

Mixed head stamp cartridge cases I do not sort/segregate. Most individuals I see at firing ranges are shooting 10yds and under at IDPA man and or equivalent humanoid shaped targets. Shooters are looking for functional ammunition as they do rattle/battle drills.

Now over on the seldom used 50yd line where the weeds are almost knee high it may make a difference sorting cases.

I'm a land share owner in a range facility that as a membership of 700 plus. The majority of the members shoot handguns. Very seldom do I see bullseye shooters.

I sort by headstamp, but not for accuracy reasons. By segregating brass, I can use overall cartridge weight as part of my QC, and if I learn that some particular kind of brass has a problem (set-back or the like), I can more easily pull them all if they're together in the same case. The sorting process works well as a forced brass inspection, too.

But if you don't care about that, there's nothing inherently problematic about mixed headstamps in 9mm.

The general consensus is that using mixed headstamp brass for 9mm is not an issue.

I sort my brass by headstamp just for my own peace of mind. Using the same headstamp also gives you roughly the same feeling during priming and seating.

If it was me and I spent the money to buy new Starline brass, then i would definitely keep/use them for special loads where I want to remove the different headstamp variable.

There was a big primer shortage about 20 years ago (Gulf War 1, Assault Weapon Ban scare, etc) and primers were extremely hard to get.

I shot a mixture of Win Small Pistol, Win Small Pistol Mag, Win Small Rifle, CCI Small Pistol, and CCI Small Rifle in a bunch of mixed head stamp pistol brass (never sort pistol stuff here) in pretty much every small primered pistol case you can think of.

Never could tell any difference through the club chrono or tell any difference while shooting any of them. I tend to run mid-range loads in all my guns, if I want more power I just move up to more powerful caliber. Might have made a difference if I was pushing the ragged edge at the top of the load charts like a lot of people like to do.

Good thing about it was that it inspired me to stock up on ammo and all reloading supplies when they became available again in the early 2000's. Haven't had to worry about any of the Obama shortages.

Off thread but to reply to LTH.

LTH no tests on penetration with the RMR RN. I just bought them for punching paper. Sorry.

I sort cases, I purchases 23,000 cases from a place just north of NYC, there were 8,000 + 9mm Winchester and Federal cases. While sorting I found 3 Berdan cases, when finished I could not find the 3 Berdan cases.
