Well I'm disassembling my Ruger for the first time, its the target competition model and I have removed the main spring housing. It says to put in an empty magazine, pull the trigger, and the bolt should pop out or easily pulled out, but it doesn't want to budge.

Is this just because its new and should i keep pulling or what?

Without the mainspring, you have poin the gun up and shake it a bit so the hammer strut clears the frame so the hammer can move back to let the bolt out of the receiver.

I think you've mis-read the manual, you have to have the mag in to pull the trigger to drop the hammer, then remove the mag, then remove the main spring. Then point it up and shake to get the bolt to push the hammer back.

The manual's correct, you must have a magazine installed anytime you want to move the hammer's position. A Mark III has a magazine interlock safety and the sear is captured by the safety hook whenever the magazine is removed. To remove the bolt the hammer must be moved into the full rearward position. Whenever the mainspring is removed the hammer is fully upward and must be released with a magazine installed to the rearward position.

Follow the directions here to fieldstrip: http://www.guntalk-online.com/fsprocedures.htm

Hope this helps.

The best way is to replace the hammer and hammer bushing with one from a Mark II. Volquartzen sells replacement target hammers and Clark sells a hammer bushing and pin kit.

One thing to check if you're having funny function problems with these guns is to make sure that the filler screws for the scope mount holes haven't been turned in too far. That will tie up the bolt.
