This happened pretty close to my home. Unfortunately, the victim of these worthless punks just died.

Maybe this will at least wake up some of the blissninny politicians here in the Twin Cities metro area and put more focus on fighting crime and less focus on political correctness and smoking bans.

Robbers shoot man, 25, in head
Mother's purse stolen after man's family finished dining out

BY FREDERICK MELO Pioneer Press

A 25-year-old man leaving a restaurant in Minneapolis' bustling Uptown area was shot in the head late Saturday, moments after his mother gave up her purse to two robbers without resisting, according to Minneapolis police and witnesses.
Authorities called the brazen and unprovoked attack near Calhoun Square the latest in a surge of violent robberies in the southwest Minneapolis precinct that includes the popular entertainment district.

The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. as the man and his mother, sister and a female friend were walking toward their car, which was parked on a residential block of Girard Avenue South near the Calhoun Square parking ramp.
Citing the family's preferences, police declined to identify the man, who was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. Authorities said he was in critical condition Sunday.

Minneapolis police spokesman Ron Reier said the three women were not injured. He said police are asking for the public's help identifying the attackers. The suspects were described as wearing dark, hooded sweat shirts. The men fled on foot, and at least one of them may have jumped into a white car parked in a nearby alleyway.

Police inspector Kris Arneson called the shooting unprovoked.

"What we know is there was not a struggle," she said. "The suspects ran, and there was a white car seen leaving the scene."

Family members were returning to their car after dining at a restaurant at the corner of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street with the man's mother, who was visiting Minnesota from Virginia, Arneson said. Police did not identify the restaurant.

Some Uptown residents said muggings and robberies have escalated throughout the busy entertainment district and asked for greater police protection.

"People flock from the suburbs to come here," said 23-year-old Mitch Skinner, a recent college graduate who moved into the area last year. "It's just creepy that it was a family going out to dinner."

Arneson, the precinct commander, said robbery reports in the southwest Minneapolis precinct have jumped about 67 percent since this time last year, climbing from 60 to 100. Aggravated robberies involving weapons or violence increased even more dramatically during the same period, doubling from 27 to 60, she said.

The precinct is bounded by Interstate 35W on the east, Interstate 94 to the north and the city limits on the west and south.

At a news conference Sunday, City Council Member Ralph Remington joined Reier and Arneson in promising greater numbers of officers in the area.

We are increasing the police presence," Remington said.

"We have to be sure we find these suspects … and we bring them to justice."
Officials said they did not know yet how many more officers would be deployed. That came as disappointing news to Ronald Barry, 36, who said he heard the shooting from his Girard Avenue apartment.

Barry said he immediately forced his two children and two visiting nephews to lie on the floor and then called 911. He ran out to find the gunshot victim bleeding profusely from his forehead and lying unconscious in the street, with one of the women screaming.

"There was no need to shoot the guy," said Barry, who was still shaken Sunday afternoon. He said he grew up in the neighborhood and had never witnessed such an act of violence. He said he had not slept since the incident. The robbers "obviously got what they wanted."

Arneson encouraged residents and visitors in the Uptown area to take precautions at night, such as walking in groups, carrying a cell phone, parking in ramps or lighted areas and staying alert.

Girard Avenue resident Justin Ellis, 22, said he fended off an early-morning mugger last August and wished police would step up patrols.

"You've got college kids walking around here drunk," Ellis said. "It's a prime target area."

These poor people WERE traveling in a group, they probably had a cell phone and they were only 1/2 block from a parking ramp (that was probably full).

There's been a double-digit increase in muggings all across Minneapolis since last year. Why don't the police ever encourage citizens to learn to protect themselves? Or to at least run?

Before I saw that you had quoted that line, that is exactly what I was thinking. What would that do? He was already doing that and ended up dead.

"If it saves the life of one child, it is worth it" - Bill Clinton, March 13, 2000

Well Billy, was it worth his life? :cuss: :banghead:

hey sarah brady, was it worth HIS life?

Politicians seem unwilling to accept the fact that for some gangs, killing a mugging victim is seen as a badge of status, or an initiation.

But, of course, all criminals are victims of society, right? :barf:

Ready, have you visited twincitiescarry.com?? There is much consideration of this over there. Based on stories from a friend who lives in that area, Somali gangs are rampant there and they could care what they do, whom they hurt or kill. All they want is the money & CCs. The Minneapolis PD seems pretty much impotent in this area. I don't know if it's a lack of leadership or just pure apathy. Minneapolis is not a place where I like to frequent. I'll stay in the burbs, even though I DO have a permit to carry.

Also in many cases criminals kill their victim(s) after the crime (even though the victim complies without a fight) so there is no witness to the crime. This is why the "duty to retreat" is so stupid. In many cases a victrim will be killed while trying to retreat so that the criminal can complete the crime (e.g kill him and then take his wallet).

Mysteriously, he left out the part about keeping and bearing arms.

asked for greater police protection.

How many times do they have to be told that the police are not responsible for preventing the commission of a crime and they can not be held responsible for failing to "protect" you?

Hmmm. Sounds like exactly what this dead victim was doing but it doesn't seem to have worked, does it?

Oh wow, I was just through Calhoun Square yesterday afternoon. A dear friend of mine was visiting from NY--we'd have spent more time in the area if our original destination wasn't closed. Incidentally, we're both graduate students like the victim was.

I try to avoid that area, but if I'm there I'm carrying. I don't think I'll take a criminals word that he's not going to hurt me or mine.

Anytime I go to Uptown or Downtown, I always carry. I completely ignore any postings against carrying guns. They can ask me to leave if they have a problem. Last night my wife, who had been out of town for a week, saw a story about this on the local news, and she said, "What kind of a lunatic wouldn't carry a gun around here? She used to be against carrying handguns. Now she's planning to take a class and get her handgun carry permit.

I don't expect the simpering twits who seem to comprise the majority of Minneapolis residents to come to this sensible conclusion. So far the only thing these damned fools are clamoring for is better lighting. Not one word about self defense.

Incidentally, I posted a negative review of a coffee shop which posted "no guns" and citysearch.twincities.com refused to add it to their site, saying that was irrelevant to the service they provide.

Hmm, Sarah Brady and all of her anti-gun, anti-rights, anti-self-defense minions constantly advise: "give them what they want, they won't hurt you." Ummm, yeah. Tell it to this guy with a bullet in his head.

Hey! That's great advice coming from the authorities (who, hypocritically pack high-capacity pistols on their belts and wear body armor). Just walk in a group like the man who just died infront of his mother, sister and friend. That will help you avoid getting shot in the face like this fellow did who took the advice of local cops. Have a cell phone! - so you can dial the clean-up team to mop up your family member's brains off the sidewalk. Gosh, I love all these officer friendly's and their awesome advice. I wonder if these officer friendly's offer this great advice to their own families too? Hmm...

Girard Avenue resident Justin Ellis, 22, said he fended off an early-morning mugger last August and wished police would step up patrols.

This fellow here is another product of government-educations camps. He has been totally emasculated by the massive propaganda bombardment of school and media to reject the concept of individuality and independence in self-defense, and is subsequently used by that same media as a supporter of their pro-State/big-daddy should protect you government apologist article. Big-brother will assign this guy an A+ for his attitude and forfeiture of free-will and thought. Here's a guy who already fought off muggers, yet it still hasn't clicked in his head that the police will not stop crime (they aren't designed to), but asks for more. 2 + 2 = 5.

Most of the ideas for protecting yourself I hear just make me mad. "co operate" THEY DID. "stay in groups" THEY DID etc etc.
When mention WAS made about CCW this one Officer made some comment "this will make it MORE dangerous" (radio so not 100% sure of exactly what said)

I know that there isn't any information in the article, but was this guy from WV? We had a news story about a guy here locally who was killed in a shooting just like this in MN. Wondering if it is the same kid. Damn shame - one more reason why I'm happy I jumped through the hoops and got my permit, and now carry every day.

Yeah, he's from WV and was a graduate student at Clemson University in biomedical engineering. Worked for NASA and by all accounts was rising star.

• Clemson student shot on spring break trip

Michael Zebuhr, a 25-year-old student at Clemson University, was shot in the Uptown area of Minneapolis after leaving a restaurant Saturday night.

Zebuhr, a student in the Ph.D. program in bioengineering at Clemson, was visiting his sister Laura, a graduate instructor at the University of Minnesota, during spring break.

He was shot in the head just before 10 p.m. Saturday when two male assailants robbed Zebuhr’s mother of her purse and then shot him, even though police said he hadn’t resisted the robbers.

Zebuhr was listed in critical condition Monday evening at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The shooting was the latest in a string of violent robberies in the popular Uptown entertainment district south of downtown.

Yeah, what kind of savage heathen society would actually want their citizens to fight back if someone threatened their life and family?!

...the police will not stop crime (they aren't designed to)

I wonder how many people know that enforcing the law and preventing crime are not the same?

I was watching the news tonight and some neighbor hood spokesman was saying they were going to organize into groups of four and walk the streets. Sounds just about the way these Bad Guys like it. Just as long as they cooperate.:barf:

Here is an idea. The Brady folks want to gun manufacurors when their product is used to kill how about a class action lawsuit against the Brady Campain by victims and their families when someone complies with the criminal and is then shot, stabbed, beaten, etc. They were following the recommendations of the Brady folks because the Brady folks conviced them that compliance made them safer than defending themselves. Also what about victims further injured or killed while trying to retreat in places where the Brady folks fight/fought the removal of the "duty to retreat" laws.
