I am learning first hand about an unintended consequence of Missouri's new CCW law.
It will cause fewer people to get CCW permits.
Here's how.
The CCW law in Missouri allows anyone who is at least 21 and is not a criminal to legally carry a handgun concealed in their vehicle with no license or permit required.
I teach CCW in Arkansas, where even concealed carry in your vehicle legally requires a CCW permit.
Most folks who get CCW licenses in Arkansas are interested primarily in car carry.
Not that many folks want to go to the trouble of getting all the gear to actually carry a gun on their bodies most of the time. Some do, but not near as many as want to just car carry.
People in Missouri don't have to get a CCW permit to car carry now.
And I've spent a chunk of change trying to get a class going in McDonald County, Missouri without any results.
I had a whole chapter of the American Legion turn me down, citing exactly that reason......They see no point in paying for a CCW permit when they don't need one to carry a concealed gun in their vehicles.
Any MO residents come to the same conclusion yet?
On the one hand I'm a little disappointed as MO won't provide me with a new student pool. Not as much money coming into my gun and accessories fund as I had hoped.
On the other hand, I'm rather jealous of MO as it is now more free than Arkansas. I wish I could carry concealed in my vehicle with no permit and do so legally.
I would even willingly give up my part time business of being a CCW instructor if I could be able to carry with no permit required.
