Missouri Senator introducing bill to force gun registration as a condition of school enrollment.


Senate Bill 124 would require parents or guardians of school children to notify the school district or the governing body of a private or charter school, that he or she owns a firearm within 30 days of enrolling the child in school or becoming the owner of a firearm.

Parents could be charged with negligence if a firearm is brought to school by a child, kills or injures another person with it or commits a crime with it and it's found that the firearm was not in a secure location or locked.
 
Since education is compulsory, I don't see how this could ever be enforced. If you refuse to answer the question, your school district would still have to accept your child's registration, assuming you are a resident.
 
Other than informing the school the rest of it's already law. If your child does something with your gun your responsible for any criminal charges
 
Notify the district? For what purpose? How do we know it couldn't be used to discriminate against a student because his parents are known gun owners? How do we know the list couldn't fall into the wrong hands and be used as a shopping list for criminals?
 
Depending on the child, I can see that. At a young age, by combination of education and physical security, you are responsible for what your kids are able to do with your guns. If you can leave it in the drawer and little Jimmie knows not to play with it, fine. If little Jimmie is stubborn and wants to play with it, it needs to be locked. I'm not saying mandatory safety controls in the home; I'm saying that if the child is deemed young enough then it is the parents who are at fault if the child does something wrong.

On the other hand, if a 15 year old does something...that's all on him.
 
The benevolent comrade teachers could then better target any possibly future defenders of the bourgeois Constitution for "retraining". It's fairly simple comrade citizen....
 
But of course, if you home school you must inform yourself that you have a firearm(s). :banghead:
 
Bahaha! "sir, do i have a firearm, yes sir, i do. Well sir we are going to have to make sure your firearm is locked before classes. Wait, it's mine, no, it's mine! BANG BANG BANG! So much for home schooling. " Now wait, is that murder or suicide? Do you have to have multiple personalities to homeschool and own a gun? I am confused...

Vamo nailed it. The GOP dominates both chambers. A big-city liberal Democrat's chances of ever getting anything anti-gun out of committee is nil. We get several anti gun laws filed each year. The never move beyond referral to a committee where they die.

Additionally, this bill has serious constitutional issues. Some obvious, some less so.

Finally, failing to report ownership is an infraction punishable by not more than $100. In other words, it isn't a criminal act and no one would enforce it (or comply with it).
 
Antis think gun owners are all scum and potential criminals.
This is a load of self righteous nonsense, treating gun owners like crack addicts.
Cars kill far more children than guns, yet they wouldn't ask you if you had a car.

I shave with my collection of straight razors, and my wife has a nice sharp set of kitchen knives. Should we report ourselves to our son's school in case they think we aren't responsible enough not to leave them lying around?

Absolutely asinine.
 
I think that if your kid can take your gun to school that easily, you should go to jail. There is no excuse for a parent who leaves a gun around where a kid could get it.
We don't need a new law to tell us that, it's already illegal in most places, and common sense.
