Mod to J-frame Hogue Monogrip

Somewhere on the web in the past few months, I ran across a thread with pictures of a shortened Hogue Monogrip on a S&W J-frame. I thought it might have been in THR's "642 Club", but I just can't find it. I am particularly interested in how the shortened monogrip was attached to the frame. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks...

I believe that there is a "shackle" that snaps onto the bottom of the grip, staying there with a tab from either side. The screw goes through the grip and into the female recepticle on the "shackle"

I doubt that made any sense whatsoever but once you see it you will understand. Click on the "view" of the Super Redhawk grip for a larger picture

Thanks for the reply - I have a Monogrip on my 642 and understand how it's attached. What I'm looking for is a post by a guy that shortened the monogrip by about 3/8" so the grip did not extend as far below the frame bottom as the stock model. I am trying to figure out how (or if) he attached the bottom of the grip to the frame. There are discussions on THR about a petition to Hogue requesting that they manufacture such a grip, but as far as I know, Hogue has not done so.

As you probably know, the Houge Bantam #61000's are shorter, but leave the back strap exposed.


I can shoot an exposed frame gun comfortably but only in the steel frame revolvers. The lightweights have too much of a bite with exposed-frame boot grips. With the Monogrips the lightweights are comfy and a different animal, but not as concealable.

I think you may have mistaken a shortened Uncle Mike's grip. I remember the post but it was the longer Uncle Mike's that came on the 3" J's, trimmed to the bottom of the frame.

From modding a hogue grip a bit to fit my hand better here's the best I can come up with (though you've got me thinking as my J-frame would benefit immensely from this).

The rubber coating is about an 1/8-1/4" thick over basically plastic. A quick cut with a saw followed by some sanding would trim the bottom down and get it contoured right. The section the screw on the shackle threads into is basically just a threaded steel washer set into the plastic in the bottom of the grip. Some epoxy should get it stuck back into the bottom of the grip. Alternatively you could cut the whole "plug" that the washer sits free and stick in into the base of your now shortened grip.

I'm going to try that this weekend. I'll try to post some pics and let you know how it goes.

The Hogue made a suprizing difference in the feel of my Mod36. I think you will like it.

You've got the right idea, and I'm looking forward to your posting the results. However, It seems to me that the washer in the bottom of the monogrip is not threaded - the mounting bolt screws into the threads of the square nut that's mounted inside the shackle and pulls the grip and washer up tight against the shackle. So what may be needed is to "section" the grip (removing a ~1/4" horizontal section), gluing the shackle nut to the bottom strap of the gun grip, and using a precisely shortened mounting bolt. The ideal solution might be to drill and tap the bottom strap to receive the bolt! I don't have the revolver in front of me now, but will get it and make some measurements. I trust that you have the skill to pull this off, and show/tell us who are more ham-handed, how to do it!

As stated above, the screw, square nut, and shackle in the butt of the Hogue Monogrip are necessary to mount it to the revolver frame.

I can see how it would be possible to modify the butt of another style Hogue grip that attaches with the threaded screw running from side to side in a clam shell type grip.

If and when somone effectively modifies a the butt of a Hogue Monogrip I'd sure like to see how they did it.

Cause we have some very creative minds around this joint.

Sorry guess my post from this morning didn't take. I got honey-do'd last weekend, so no chance. I need to pick up a spare mono-grip tomorrow as the only one I've got currently is my good one that I trimmed to fit me. Hopefully a report on progress will be forthcoming tomorrow.
