Excuse me in advance for being longwinded.
A local seller has a S&W model 28 6" 357 mag. for sale. He is asking top price for it given it's condition which he says is 90%.
He is trying to justify the price because the deal comes with a spare 4" barrel.
My question is what is the spare barrel worth and is it a common practice to swap barrel's.
I thought that would only be something done by a gunsmith and not something that would be done
to change the gun back and forth from 4" to 6 ".
By the way the " firm" asking price is $700.
Thanks
Bob

If it is a 28, I doubt the barrel is 6 1/2". More likely 6". Switching barrels is not a five minute job even you have a frame fixture and barrel vise (or you have a Dan Wesson).
For that model the price sounds way high.

THX corrected my post.

For you a spare S&W barrel is worthless. For the seller it's very valuable.

Spare barrels for fixed barrel revolvers are of use only if someone wants one for reboring, say to .44 Special or .45 caliber. Even then the price is very low, nothing near what you'd expect.

That's kinda what I thought, I think he's had the gun gun for a long long time and the price reflects sentimental value to him.

Thanks

For a 90% 28 that sounds kinda high. I've swapped barrels on 19s, 28s and 27s, 24 (.44spl) and 1950 .45acp (and some cylinders); and have several barrels for them all in case I ever want to change them. It's a job for a good gunsmith and some of mine were done that way but most at the S&W factory. In this case an extra 4" barrel is irrelevant.

Thanks all for the info....
Could you guy's chime in on what the going price is for a Model 28 ^" 357 in 90% condition worth these days..

The barrel is worth $100 to $150 and yes, people do buy them.

I don't place any value on the average person's 90% rating for a gun I cannot see. One person's 90% might be another's 98% or it could be 70%. It could have 10% wear in all the right places to make it a desirable older used but well cared-for sixgun. It could have languished in a safe in a damp basement and the owner figures the pitting on one side of the cylinder is worth 10%. Here's one I picked up last year for $600. Not a steal but it's a pre-28 Highway Patrolman and in better condition than 90%.
