I recently ran across a Smith and Wesson Model 57 .41 Magnum at a local establishment for $600. From what I can see in the online gun auctions this price rides about $100 less than typical... Yay or Nay?
It is NOT pinned and recessed (unfortunately)... but the lock up is very good and the bore clean... btw... this is a blue 6 or 6 1/2" with the Hogue rubber monogrip...wear is minimal except for a 1/8" scratch on the rib of the barrel about halfway up...
That's right in the ball park for a clean 57. When you compare the price to what Smith is asking for a new 57 it's downright cheap. I'd rather have a pre-lock anyway.
All Smith & Wesson revolvers have been equipped with an internal locking mechanism since the acquisition by Saf-T-Hammer. The mechanism is relatively unobtrusive, is activated with a special key, and renders the firearm inoperable. While the lock can simply be left disengaged, some gun enthusiasts prefer "pre-lock" guns. Smith & Wesson has repeatedly stated that the locking mechanism does not affect reliability, although several cases have been documented.[25]ref
Smith & Wesson announced in March, 2009, that it would begin phasing the internal lock out of its revolver lineup.[26] Smith and Wesson is now producing the original model 442 and 642 without the internal lock.
I'm a .41 fan and an S&W M57 fan. I once owned an M29 S&W .41 mag. That's right, an M29 stamped right there on the frame. But it was a .41!!! Congratulations on your find.
