As I understand it, the newest Model 70 is being made by FN in South Carolina.

As I look through the mass of "Model 70" ads on the on-loine auctions and sites, is there a way to tell if the gun is from SC? Maybe by the particular model or something?

Yes, but that does no help when viewing ads online, and theres way too many rifles to inquire individually. I have a customer who wants a Model 70 30/06 from SC specifically.

Trigger looks a bit different. It doesn't extend as far forward at the top as the old one. Very hard to see.

Others may be discernible by the exact model, characteristics like buttpad, etc.

What EXACT model are you looking at?

The ads will mention MOA trigger or FN if made in SC. If made in New Haven it should be called an M70 Classic. And if you have a customer that wants one, why don't you just buy it from a wholesaler. All the new manufactured guns are from South Carolina and you'll probably save 50 or $100 off the gunbroker price if you're a dealer.

With most online auctions, there will be a picture of the bolt handle side of the action. If you can't see a claw extractor on the bolt, that eliminates it from contention as a FN produced Model 70. If you do see a claw extractor, contact the seller and ask. I have contacted many sellers, and they are usually good about answering your questions.

It will come from a wholesaler, I'm just trying to see what I can offer the guy via the on-line ads. If I can pin the guy down on a model(he is of the opinion that the "Classic" is from SC, but you say no, and I tend to believe you) I can call a wholesaler. Gun buyers ain't always the easiest folks to deal with ya know?
