Model 70 rebarrel to 264

Ive decided to send my classic stainless off to douglas to get their barrel fitting service in 264 win mag. Ive got one of the new bell and carlson ultralight medalists and a one piece ss trigger guard. Im looking for a decent trigger, ive heard jewells are nice but know nothing about them. Anyone dealt with jewell or just simply has some good ideas on custom options?

I've got Jewells on two of my M70's. Nice trigger, but not exactly a drop-in fit. You will need to remove a little metal from the trigger guard. .264 Win Mag? Have you considered 6.5x55? Longer barrel life and MUCH easier to find brass for.

I'm kind of partial to the 264 but Ive shot the 6.5 swede and have been pleased plus I'm sure it would be easier on the shoulder.

I can think of nothing more nostalgic than a Classic M70 in a 26" 264 Winchester Magnum chambering. I lusted for that round in my younger days, in spite of knowing that the barrels were only good for about 1000 full power rounds.
I've happily settled for a 6.5x55. Older but wiser?

I have a Jewell in my M70. It's a drop fit with the Williams steel floorplate. Very nice if you like a light trigger. Keep it dry and oil free.

I have Jewell single-stage adjustable triggers in three Remington 700s and I'm currently trying a Jewell 2-stage adjustable trigger in an AR-15. I'm also trying a Geissele SSA trigger in an AR-15 (2-stage, non-ajustable). Other trigger experience includes Remington's X-Mark Pro in a 700, a Timney drop-in single-stage 3lb trigger in an AR-15, and a Timney drop in single-stage 4lb trigger in an AR-10. So I've tried quite a few triggers and I find that the adjustable Jewell triggers are the best, both in single and two-stage varieties.

Having owned two .264 Win Mags over the years, and having shot both extensively, I am of the opinion that the stories about shot out barrels are highly exaggerated. The recoil wasn't any worse than my sporter 06's. The decibel level was a lot higher, you will only forget your ear protection once with a .264.

However, both were extremely hard on brass. If I was real lucky I could 2 reloads (3 shots) out of the brass before it had to go into the trash.

Also, if you are going with a barrel length of less than 26", you might as well stick with something else, as you are not going to get the performance without that length. My favorite was a Mark 10 with a 28 inch barrel. That extra couple of inches made a huge difference in acheived velocities over the 24 inch barrel I had on my other gun.

The cartridge is a reloaders dream, has a wide spread of available bullet weights and can easily work for everything from prairie dog to black bear, and at least with mine, it wasn't picky about which bullets I used, and grouped them all into 1 to 1.5 inch groups.

Thanks for the input. Ive gone ahead and ordered two jewell's, one for my .30-06 SS Boss and another that will make its way on the 264 whenever that materializes. Im intending on a 26" bbl on the new custom and will probably use a similar untralight B&C medalist like I replaced my 06's factory plastic. One word for the wise, if anyone intends on using a newer B&C stock intended for the new one piece triggerguard/floorplate don't buy one of the new winchester ones off the parts department. That POS wasn't even anywhere near a williams or montana one piece, its not even made out of stainless. Its made out of aluminum and the end result will run you the same as a williams.

new brass for a .264 win mag is as simple as neck-sizing 7mm brass to 6.5 and fire-forming. as long as you don't have a 7mm RM there's nothing to get mixed up.
